Suomenlinna is one of the world’s largest historical maritime fortresses. Built on six islands in the 1700s, the garrison town is among the most popular sights in Finland and a living district that is home to around 850 city residents. Suomenlinna has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. With its museums and events, Suomenlinna offers a unique experience for visitors of all ages, who can also enjoy idyllic cafes and cosy restaurants. Children can have a great time exploring the many tunnels of the old fortress. It is good to reserve at least half a day for a visit to Suomenlinna. The vast fortress is best explored on foot, so prepare for some hiking with good shoes and a windbreaker. Suomenlinna is open year-round, although some facilities are open only in the summer months. The municipal ferry to Suomenlinna departs from the Market Square throughout the year. In summertime you can also take a JT-Line waterbus from the Market Square. The journey takes around fifteen minutes.
Located on islands off Helsinki, Suomenlinna is a unique historical monument and one of the largest maritime fortresses in the world. Its history is closely entwined with that of Finland and the Baltic region. Helsinki can also thank Suomenlinna for its early growth and prosperity.
1748 Construction of the fortress begins under the command of Augustin Ehrensvärd.

That old gun is well placed facing almost towards camera. Great place so close to city, isn't it. Stone walls and Finnish flag give good idea of the place.

A superb blue sky, with good sharpness, colour, contrast & saturation. The walking track between the fg cannon, & the bg fort, links the dual focal points together nicely. Tfs!

Nice compo heere with the cannon doing a good FG and just missing the viewer! I like the strong colors and the wide DOF keeping everything in focus.

I very much like the point of view and framing in this fine composition. The canon certainly catches the eye before we move naturally diagonally towards the fort in the background and then the flag. Superb natural colours and excellent sharpness.

Interesting history of this fortress, and spectacular photograph with this open mouth, fortunately now inoffensive, which creates depth. Beautiful light, good clearness. Congratulations.
Have a nice day

Original vertical work.

A really artmospheric place and photo as well. This canon is placed very well here in the picture and it underlines the menacing impression of of these strong walls in the background.
Greeting from sunshine and 17°C!

Excellent sharpness in this photo, and a very good POV. A very well balanced composition of this old fortress, built by the Swedes in the 18th century. It was called Sveaborg in those days. Now it is exactly 200 years since the eastern part of Sweden was lost. I guess that the independant Finland is now just as happy without their western neighbour...

Another fine capture in this interesting series!
I notice you had the best possible light during your stay in Finland, and the colours are really outstanding...
A fine composition, where the old iron gun is a natural eye-catcher!
