Photographer’s Note

Vaasa Church was planned by the architect C. A. Setterberg and consecrated in 1869. The church, built in an English neo-gothic style, has a capacity of almost 900 people.

The grey plinth stones were brought by horse-sleigh from Punakari. The 4,000 barrels of lime needed for the construction work were ordered from Sweden. The bricks for the walls came from a brickwork located in a quarter of the city known as Hietalahti. The glazing was ordered from the Nuutajärvi glass factory. Unfortunately, the completion of the church was complicated by cracks in the already finished tower, which subsequently had to be entirely rebuilt.
