Photographer’s Note

At the end of March I showed you a view of these same islands just in front of Helsinki harbour. You can view it here. This shot was also taken from the deck of a Viking line ferry leaving Helsinki for Stockholm. This time was summer at its best, even with a not so frequent heatwave, with temperatures approaching 30 °C in early afternoon. The photo was taken from an upper deck. Here you can also see the white ferry of Silja Line in the distance. It always leaves the harbour a few minutes before the Viking line ferry. Typically for a heat wave there were no clouds on the sky, not even in the evening. So the sky here is quite dull.

The first island is called Valkosaari and the one behind it is called Luoto (Swedish Klippan). On the right background is the Kaivopuisto neighbourhood. You can read more information on the islands in the above mentioned photo. A waterbus has just arrived at the quay of the NJK yacht club, bringing a bunch of people to the restaurant and taking of another one back to the city.

In WS is an even wider view taken 9 minutes earlier, with the same focal length, but from a longer distance. It takes about 10 minutes for the ferry to turn around in the harbour after it leaves. The original is shot from the starboard side, the WS from the port side.

it is very exciting to compare the two versions! This is another very fine capture of this natural gem that is so beautifully situated. Very pleasant colors and light. A very nice proof that Helsinki is one of the most interesting capitols in the world. TFS!

In summer it really is much more inviting! ;-) These two islands must be wonderful places, places to feel good, I think. You have had a very favourable light when taking this picture. The workshop photo is a good addition in order to show the surroundings, the situation of these islands.

I remember your previous post from this POV. It's very interesting to see the differences. It's a beautiful image and it alone would be enough to convince anyone of the famous beauty of Helsinki.
I like also the WS. It's curious that here it doesn't look like an island.

A lovely view of this part of Helsinki harbour, and the fine sunny day makes the place very inviting...
Seems like the elevated point of view from the big ferry is ideal for photography!

nel 1983 io andai con la nave traghetto da Helsinki (tornavo da Capo Nord) a Stoccolma. Rimasi affascinato dalla moltitudine delle isole e dal fascino di quelle città. con questa tuta bella foto mi hai fatto tornare in mente un sacco di bei ricordi.

as always: a WS photo is just as interesting and good as the "main" photo :) The view is really lovely, which makes me think of taking a little ferry trip from Stockholm to Finland again ..... or vice versa :)

being at home I gave a glance to your latest posts...
indeed a fascinating photo of a charming island. both this and the ws are very fine, sparkling with light and with nice natural colours. Such a fine seascape to admire from a deck of a ferry, one I'd like to see. The inclusion of the various channels and islands make it very interesting too.
