Photographer’s Note

There are 187 888 lakes in Finland. Lake is here defined as a body of standing water larger than 5 ares (500 m2). The number of lakes larger than 1 hectares (10 000 m2) is 56 000. Lake number density is largest north of Lake Inari, sometimes called the Finnish Pond District (Lampi-Suomi). In this area there can be 1 000 lakes within 100 square kilometres. In the Finnish Lake District in eastern Finland a typical value is 40 lakes within 100 square kilometres.

There are three lakes larger than 1 000 square kilometres in Finland: Saimaa, Inari and Päijänne. The number of lakes larger than 10 square kilometres is 309 and their total area is 21 911 km2, which is 65 % of the total lake area in Finland.

There are also mamy lakes in Nuuksio Lake Upland, which is located in the Uusimaa district and inside three minicipalities, Espoo, Vihti and Kirkkonummi. Out of them there are about 43 little lakes and ponds inside Nuuksio National Park, which also includes shores of twelve other lakes. Some of the lakes have brown water and are surrounded by open bogs, while some have clear water and rocky shores.

This lake is Iso-Parikas, about 1.6 km long and 220m wide at its widest point. I had a morning hike there one month ago. The spring was at its best.

A photo which gives calm to the viewer. It really captivates by its incredible beauty and calm. The composition here really couldn't be better. Sitting there and let the thoughts roam ...

Hej Lasse,
Another piece of Nordic beauty, a clear lake in a dense forest. Very nicely composed with the trees framing the narrow stretch of sand. I suppose this is a popular place in summer and that the atmosphere is not always as peaceful and quiet as it appears here.

The light green colours of the early summer are seen everywhere here. The water looks very inviting although it must still be quite cold. The trees to the right are spreading their branches over the lake and frames the scenery. A very attractive picture!

it's always so nice to see one more pleasant, lovely shot of Nature which you present to the world :)
Very good colours, and I like the "natural" sharpness of the image; and a very well chosen composition, of course ;)
If I could I would buy a small cottage nearby and settle down there - at least in summertime!

another beautiful photo of your Finland done with a pleasant brightness and a beautiful transparency of the water. Very interesting your notes, I didn't believe that in Finland there were 187888 lakes! I hope, one day, to be able to visit these suggestive places.

A very beautiful light on this photograph. Places which I like much where that they are for their resting environment and far from the stress of the urban life. A composition balanced with the tree on the right, also giving a good depth to the landscape. Well done Lasse, thank you.

A very classical picture in which I would have liked a human figure balancing, on the right, the tree that is on the right.
