There are many photo of White Cathedral in Helsinki (one gloomy image is mine) so I am amazed that there are no photos of this beautiful white Finlandia Hall, the work of the famous Alvaro Aalto. The weather was rather bad (but it could be worse) so there are no colours - the ground is covered with snow, the building is white and the sky overcast and white too.
Finlandia Hall is a concert hall with a congress wing in Helsinki, Finland, by Töölönlahti bay. The building was designed by Alvar Aalto. The work began in 1967 and was completed in 1971.The main features of the building's exterior are the great horizontal mass of the building proper and the towering auditorium that rises above it. The main external wall material is Carrara marble and with copper roofs, which have acquired a green patina, and teak window frames. The marble continues in the interior, and is supplemented by details in hardwoods, and ceramic. Apart from the auditorium, the main feature of the interior is the shallow and broad 'Venetian' staircase leading from the ground-floor foyer to both the main auditorium and chamber music hall.
Contemporary to the designing of the opera house in Essen, the design for Finlandia Hall shows some of the same features: asymmetricity, acoustical wall structures and the contrast between the marble balconies and cobalt blue walls in the concert hall interior. The Essen project was however endlessly delayed, to the benefit of Essen Opera, because as that building began construction in 1987, two mistakes made in the construction of Finlandia Hall were avoided. The first was the use of thin slabs of Carrara marble for the exterior, which have not held their form and have had to be replaced. The other was an acoustical feature of the concert hall tower: the slats intended for controlling the acoustic environment of the hall had to be completely closed for the acoustics to work at all.

Hello Malgo. The Finns love white, - especially in the representative architecture. In the photo the modern building looks like an ice palace. . Thank you also for the very informative text.
Best rgds, Wolfgang

Finlandia oddała w tym budynku swój mroźno-śnieżny klimat, architektura trochę jak z białych bryl lodu, bardzo ładna, pięknie zrobione

You know Malgo, Finlandia is a known Vodka brand, as well as this Concert hall, and the connectuion here could be only about the superb white painted walls, not transparent as the bottle...
The edifice color, is in some camouflage to the sky, almost off-white in tone's. Yet, you made a good choice to post this - educational item, in the TE spirit - as I did not know any about this impressive building.

Yes, there are less people around the Finlandia Hall that Market Square, though this area has many interesting buildings. And I think I haven't walked over there with a camera either.
Flat light suits with this building much better than with the cathedral I think. Though can't quite explain why. Anyway this shows forms the way Aalto planned them. Good perspective and tight framing that shows the essence.

funny comment you made about everything being white.
the sky, the building, the ground...its a total white out! :)
thats what you get when you travel to Finland in Feb :)
but i still would have loved to be there too!
too bad the sky couldn't have been a bit more blue for you here, perhaps next time.
really like the subject though.
