Back from a two weeks working vacation (renovation of granma's house)at my in-laws in eastern Finland, where there was the coldest Juhanus midsummer for the past 36 years. With temperatures around 8 degrees Celsius and some heavy wind and hailstorms it was a real pleasure to have a broken water pump in our cabin in the woods. Water had to be hauled from the lake manually and the morning shower taken in the sauna by the sea.
Nevertheless we where able to visit some interesting places again.
Here we can see the main church of the orthodox monastery of Uusi (new) Valamo. It is the only male orthodox monastery in Finland and lies in the commune of Heinevesi in eastern Finland, some 400km north of Helsinki.
The monastery was originally established in the 8th century on the island of Valamo in the Ladoga lake. During the winter war of 1941 the monks had to flee the russians and resettled in today's spot. There is still a monastery on Valamo island called the old (vanha) Valamo. Uusi Valamo is today the center of the russian orthodox faith in Finnish Carelia and attracts many pilgrims throughout the year.

I do like the inclusion of the aliums and grass in the FG,they do make a nice base for a nicely composed shot.
The architectural features of the Monastery are well portrayed in an image that is crisp and clear throughout.
Best wishes Les.

Seeing the thumbnail I certainly thought this was Russia. Well, it almost is...
I like your low POV which gives us a close-up of grass and flowers and still a good view of the church and the sky. The colours are very nice and not overdone. MIdsummer was terrible in Sweden too. We share a lot with Finland :-)

Reading your note, I felt so sorry for you - travelling all the way to Finland to have a working holiday renovating a house and then have to endure all those hardships on account of a broken water pump! At least you managed to visit some interesting places and this monastery sounds and looks like a real gem.
You have composed this shot very well indeed and I love the close foreground filled with bright green leaves and beautiful flowers. The mosaic (or is it a window?) is very attractive and you've placed it perfectly in the frame. And the two copper domes are perfectly arranged too.
Lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

"Working vacation,"...quite the oxymoron, isn't it? :) Glad to see you at least had a chance to break away for a little bit of time to capture this lovely monastery. Love how you've composed this from the low point of view, the purple color of the flowers is a sweet compliment to the scene...not to mention the green base. Living in the desert and dealing with our temperatures, it's hard to imagine it being cold anywhere else during the summer...so I'll just have to take your word for it. :) Great to have you back around, looking forward to more pictures from your time in Finland. Enjoy the new week. All the best.

It sounds that these working vacations were not the best. But hauling water from the lake manually can have its charm too, you were close to nature. And think about so many people in poor countries that have to carry water for kilometers. We usually forget how privileged we are. Hailstorms in midsummer is not what we would expect. Also in Poland the weather is not good this year, June was rainy and rather cold. But at least in this photo there is nice blue sky. Nice the church with interesting mosaic, it looks quite new. But I am attracted by these flowers, beautiful alliums and the last tulips.

love the low POV for this, it makes for a really beautiful capture. The monastery is exquisite and when set amongst nature's beauty it is all the more captivating and striking. Excellent!
Have a good week - B.

Hello Daniel - What do they say...'A change is as good as a rest', do you agree? I like your composition very much, the border of flowers makes a good addition to the shot and the way you have left the mosaic open is perfect allowing us to see the details. The copper domes are a fine architectural detail and no signs of verdigris so they must be quite new.
On my screen the image has a slight green cast but that may be due to the overcast sky. Attractive work!

I always love orthodox architecture and this is a beautiful example. The golden domes, the beautiful icon and your idea to have the flowers raise up like this presenting a painting of color against the plain white walls have all worked beautifully together. I think this would look very different and nowhere near as fine without the cleverly composed flowers.
Thanks as always

Daniel, I like to see your picture because I have been to Finland and I don't have any good pictures from their magnificent churches..great colors and a very sharp vertical!!
thank you so much for your kind comment to my last post..I am a very passionate supporter of soccer and I follow the Cup for many years...but here in Brazil is a one of a kind experience...I won't live to see this again!!
Greece didn't make it despite your kind wishes and all my support here..but I am very happy that they participated and they did as much as they did..
all the best
