Definition of "old school" according to Wikipedia: Old school can refer to anything that is from an earlier era, anything that may be considered "old-fashioned".
This mural painting in the city of Tartu, eastern Estonia, should be clearly covered by that definition. But i wouldn't have chosen this title if I hadn't intended a little joke: What the painting shows is the University of Tartu, one of the oldest of its kind in northern Europe, founded in 1632 by the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav II Adolf).
So this is "old school" whichever way you see it. You can see a photo of the University main building in a workshop. Since two workshop photos are allowed I will also include a picture of a statue of Gustav II Adolf standing in a small park behind the university.

It is a very realistic mural. I think it could have been painted according to an old engraving. Very nice photo, well seen and executed

Hi Gert,a great opportunity to create a nice "trompe-l'oeil" or "catch-eye"...great capture whit a beautiful perspective and a magic 3D effect create by the peintures and the people below,it's nice to see something of different,i like it! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Men snyggt iallafall.

the inclusion of the small group of people helps to emphasise the most impressive size and the nature of the mural,it really is a lovely work of art.

What a great artwork on that wall! Is the thing that makes you happy when passing by... Well taken, have a good evening.

This is an unusual mural and speaks of a more 'genteel' time, its interesting to compare the clothing depicted in the mural with that of the people stood chatting. TFS Gert, this is a wonderful piece of graffiti! Warm regards Rosemary

Hello Gert. Then and now. Truly a remarkable photo. It has much changed - but only gradually. The combination of both image regions is well managed. I can only say well done.
tyro (24630) 2013-08-08 11:46
Ah, you have tricked us with your clever words - so this is "old school" in either sense of the term. But you have not deceived our eyes because this is not deceit of the eye or Trompe l'oeil as I thought it might have been when I saw the thumbnail of this picture.
Yet it is a splendid mural, very competently drawn and painted indeed and also executed in the manner of the "old school" too.
And, of course, you have brightened up this whole scene by including an interesting group of people standing talking while a young lady on the left progresses directly toward the mural and helps draw our attention to it. The people too are brightly dressed in contrast to the softer and more muted colours of the mural.
Very well seen and taken with good strong light, fine colours, quick and effective composition and excellent sharpness.

I like very much the way you've composed and framed this picture enhancing the perspective of the impressive image in the mural and making the interaction between the painted setting and the people standing in front of it even more effective. There's excellent depth and sharpness, superb sense of movement and well defined colours on both the painted scene and the real one. The pictures in the workshop are lovely and informative, I particularly like the one with the king's statue. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

KristinsCamera (2373) 2013-08-08 21:23
haha, very clever ~ you ;)
in addition to the juxtaposition of the "then and now," i particularly like the color palette in this shot, with the clear, bright and crisp colors of the contemporary, living people contrasting with the faded scene of the past. nice touch to have a small bunch of people gathered in the foreground, echoed by similar (but old fashioned or old school) little bunches behind them.
and the perspective is very good, with the girl in the blue skirt almost ready to walk into the wall, and back in time :)
i would wish you a pleasant evening, but with the time difference, i think i've missed that opportunity!
annjackman (21895) 2013-08-08 22:55
I like this very much. I find myself comparing the people in the modern street with those in the mural. Although their dress differs we can see similarities such as some in groups and some walking alone. Very well observed and taken.
Kind Regards, Ann

Interesting words about different meaning of the "old school". The school on the graffiti is for sure old. very artistic mural. And like on your photos, you added interesting scene with people. Excellent composition.
Seeing this (and many other shots) I regret that digital cameras were not

This is one of my favorite genres in photography — there is photographic art, there is history, there a joke, it is expansive like Bruegel Paintings and invites each cm square to be examined.
The expression, "Old School," at least in Virginia, represents the "old way of thinking," and conveys the idea that the old way, whatever it was, was better. In gratitude for your joke, here are variations on "How many individuals to change a light bulb:
• Feminists: Ans. 6. One to change the bulb, 5 to be supportive.
• Californians: Ans. 35. One to change the bulb, 34 to share in the experience.
• Ah! But New Yorkers: "What's it to you!"

Good light and colors.

Quite a surprise seeing this, a fascinating art work. Excellent perspective and orientation with a little something else on the fg to convey the scale and reality. It certainly is a super piece of 'ol school' artwork and catchy with most of the walls are part of the mural with 3D and depth feel in it. An amazing piece of art full of charm and bit of history which add life and colors to the street. Its a masterful piece of work and so is your image, you certainly succeeded in giving both a sense of place making it a 'nice photographic impact' Wonderful, a well defined shot and very informative notes. Congrats
Enjoy the extra picture too.

graffiti is unusual. Superb work any artist. Good shot and presentation.Theme is very nice and well done.
Have a nice WE.
Urs (14082) 2013-08-10 1:46
This is a great contrast of today vs yesterday or the current students set against the old school as seen in the drawing on the wall. Vivid colour hues and high sharpness. Good photo job
macjake (67534) 2013-08-10 4:47
well, maybe in the next few hundred years the Mural on the wall will be people like the ones in the photo standing around! haha
the painters better make sure they include the modern day human race holding their I Phones! haha
Oh how the world has changed eh!
thanks for the WS photo, it puts it into perspective too.
As John mentioned, it was a bit of a ?? as it looked a bit funny in the gallery page, hard to tell what was going on with the bg scenery, but i get it now.
enjoy your weekend
eldancer1 (36343) 2013-08-10 10:16
I like this graffiti better than the ones I see around the city, and Las Vegas have a stiffer penalty for those taggers that are caught. This artwork look so real, if not for the people in front of it. Good lighting and nice details. Well done, tfs.
nikkitta (17066) 2013-08-10 12:52
Love that kind of painted wall ( also graffiti )
Never saw something like that a building with its own "portrait"
Interesting the stones used at the basement
TFS, enjoy the week end
fabbs99 (17135) 2013-08-10 20:20
Excellent exposure and sharpness in this mural painting on the walls of the old school.Amazing sharpness and perfect light.Superb pov and exposure. Excellent composition, very well done, TFS.

I love the interplay between the "3D" and the 2D. It's got a great atmosphere. Great composition.
jemaflor (96753) 2013-08-12 23:33
beautiful mural well made, brtavo for the artist, your shot is well managed with people in the FG to give life at themural scenery.
Kielia (24077) 2013-08-14 8:36
this is a wonderful impression of daily life in Tartu! You have captured this interesting wall very well – and the inclusion of the people is very helpful indeed. The photos in WS are interesting as well. A photo in the best spirit of this site - thanks for sharing!
amaryllis (36895) 2013-08-14 23:43
serp2000 (44059) 2013-08-15 10:13
What's the hooligans! Although they have some artistic education. Frankly speaking, this is very nice artwork, good alternative to the grey and boring city walls. But the citizens look very indifferent to these pictures.
Vasa (515) 2013-08-15 16:52
My interest was for your mural, but I like also your note. It is worth thematic shot with lovely graphic contrast of present people. I also follow murals and graffitis, but I dont arrive to post them. If you create a collection, I could post to you my big resolution. Belgrade is plenty of peinting walls. All the best dear friend Gert!
Romano46 (18472) 2013-08-16 6:59
Miguel82 (27674) 2013-08-21 9:50
I reply directly I'm online, this is a wonderful mural
Nice view of that artwork, the people talking and walking give more animation to that image
mjw364 (842) 2013-08-22 8:25
I like your "old school" shot and joke. The POV and composition give this a slight feel of trompe l'oeil and it adds a third dimension to the shot.
olive224 (2719) 2013-08-30 11:20
A very nice mural painting ;)
THe compo is very good with the pretty girl at the left seeming to walk on the fake road...
Well done ;)
maloutim (9639) 2013-09-14 20:24
What a lovely mural representing the university just as it is, except for the old church, the horse-carriages, and the 19th century characters.
The contrast with the present day people looks very effective, in colors, clothing and bearing.
Thanks for the addition of the two interesting WS.
kato (11630) 2013-10-29 16:27
You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the murals are drawn to reproduce Tartu, eastern Estonia in medieval times. we can see the architectures, street and people etc in those days. And, it's a good contrast with the current situation seen in FG.
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2013-12-13 5:02
it is really a beautiful artwork. Maintained nicely. You got a superb frame from it with those people in front of it. Great picture quality. Excellent colours and sharpness. Superb shot. Tfs.

ikeharel (70677) 2016-01-24 1:22
This is an amazing mural, Gert, it has a 3D effect which made this so unique.
A POV well chosen, included people on the street, busy and not noticed you with the camera.
A picture superbly rendered, fine contrast and light upon. The WS's also nice complementary's.
