This is the Grand bridge in Pärnu (Pernau / Perona) Estonia. The history of this bridge leads us back to the 19th century, when it supposedly was first built, was complete at about 1920's and, to that period, it had a valuable option - it could lift itself.
The bridge was completely destroyed during the WWII, it was rebuilt afterwards with the lifting mechanism, but this mechanism never came to use again.
The picture you see is very similar built in early 20's, but it is much less detailed and beautyful. It still has a raising mechanism which is never been used since the erarly 60's, when it was rebuilt again because it had a constructional problem - the bridge could not be lifted without collapsing itself...from that time it remains just as you see her from this picture - untouched and unraised. Probably not to be raised ever again. In a few years new bridge will be built next to the existing, a couple of hundred meters apart. The old one remains intact. |

Hi Margus,
Good shot and informative note. I like the reflections you've got here. The image looks a little soft, remember to sharpen your photos as the last step before you post onto TE. The small image always takes details from the original shot.
Good stuff.
Welcome to TE, I hope youe get as much fun out of the site as I do.
Cheers!
Peter
