Another in my occasional series of men in pubs. This old gent seemed to be a permanent fixture at his table in the window. While we were visiting Tallinn in the deep cold of February, we made the Hell Hunt (Gentle Wolf) our "local" where we went to unfreeze; the fact that it also sold local craft beers helped too. This old man seldom seemed to have a drink; quite often he was asleep; most often he was reading the paper. I guess he too was keeping warm and seeking some company, though he seldom spoke to anyone.
I know the quality is questionable: the lighting was "challenging" and I didn't want to use flash, so this is another camera-balancing act (like the previous posting). I will admit to a bit of Photoshop tweaking to pull some information out of the shadows...

A most intriguing title and I loved the note here.
Bless you for not using a flash, Will. It would have destroyed not only the atmosphere, but possibly the picture too. OK, it's not ultraŘberprofessional quality, but I like its feel. The inclusion of the framed picture is another plus in the ensemble.

With my usual sleuth-like tendencies, I managed to find this pub - the first in Estonia I believe? - after directions from a YouTube video. You can also take a "vitual tour" of the place here and I think I can see the actual table where this old fellow is sitting.
Trouble is, that when I first saw this picture I thought that you had sneakily taken a picture of me - he looks about as dishevelled as I do on a good day.
Seriously, this is another of your fine "character shots" - something at which you certainly excel - and even better considering it was taken in poor light and against the much brighter light coming in through the window behind this venerable gentleman.
Very well seen and very well taken with very well controlled light and excellent details.

I like this a lot, and for a number of reasons. The backlight behind the man I think looks really well, and almost takes him away from the scene around him, and putting a great focus on him. His pose with the magnifying glass is brilliant, and I can imagine him fixing clocks or making toys just as easily as reading the paper, which gives a very appealing character to him.
The fact that you chose B&W and included the full picture on the left are all brilliant to making a wonderful scene.
All the best

A very different shot from your previous, but the subject is great - I love the intensity with which he is peering through the lens here. Compositionally, this is quite strong as well, with a nice light/dark balance and the nice curved rail at bottom. I can imagine how tough the lighting was here, and it looks like you did well to manage it to this point.

I think the poor light and the slight lack of sharpness suits this subject perfectly. It gives the portrait a timeless feel and a special mood that suits the character of the shot very well.
And then Tallinn is such a pleasant city with countless photo opportunities to.
have a good day

Sherlock Holmes is back and trying to discover a secret. Nice soft B&W picture.

you did well to post this picture, sometimes seized the moment is better than photo quality, looks like a vintage photo, excellent framing, I hope that does not serve us too soon a lens to make our shots and editing ;)

An interesting character, even before reading your note, I found him engaging in an odd way, like he is quite detached. The focus and image may not be perfect, but it adds to the feel of the place, the character and I like it. B&W suits it well.
