The story:

June 2005.

We, two colleagues, a friend and myself, were to go on a hiking trip to Greenland. We chose the start of June to be a good time, to avoid most of the mosquitos and it's also the start of the short, but hectic artic summer, with light all day long from the midnight sun. I was there at the same time the year before, and could tell from my experience then, that there shouldn't be any problems with snow along our track.

The route we were to hike is the same route which in winter time is used for the skiing people in the Arctic Circle Race. It's a 180 km route which goes from Kangerlussuaq (Sdr. Stromfjord), at the start of the inland icecap and ends in Sisimiut (formely Holsteinsborg), at the west coast of Greenland.

-Well we started our hiking trip and we were all a bit euphoric about that beautiful nature and we finally were on our way, after months of planning.

The first 40 km was easy going with just some minor river forgings and small climbs. But after that it started to change, the underground got more and more wet and the landscape started to be all covered in snow.
The river forgings became more and more challenging, with the fast currents and now we practically walked in soft wet snow all the time. This wasn't what I remebered it to be at the same time last year and we were later told, that just 10 days before the whole area got a lot of snow, a little unusual for that time of year.
We went on and were all very tired after walking in wet boots for 5 days (not very pleasent). On day 6 we were almost there, just 25 km left to our goal. But one of us couldn't walk anymore and for every kilometre his and the ground conditions got worse and worse, so he decided to be left in a hut, so we could continue. His feet were all swollen and had deep blisters. Although we were so close to our destination we couldn't tell for sure how long time, it would take to walk the last part of it. The pace was about 1 km/h and it could be even lower for the last part. We shared our rations and made sure that he had food for 4 days and we all said goodbye to him. That was one of the most surrealistic thing I ever have experienced.

To finish the story shortly, everything went well and we got to the town. The one we left was brought home on a snowmobile by one of the locals in town.

After all this struggle and all these days with wet feets and the freeze dried food, I still miss that magical moment from that time. Non of us will never forget what we experienced together.

As for the picture goes, it shows a moment where we all were very tired and a bit exhausted, but there was still energy to take pictures and enjoy the moment.

Carpe Diem.

-Thanks for your patience.

Always nice to have a happy ending at the end of an epic saga! Great image - intense sun and shadow - quite surreal in many ways. Interesting note. TFS. Paul.

Hi Christian,

A really nice shot. I love your composition and that you have made very good use of the lighing conditions here. Perfect with the snow covered hillside and the clear blue sky in the background. Have a nice week-end!

Cheers,

Ulf

I like this picture because it brings me to a special mood, one I experienced myself after hiking and reaching a point with spectacular view. The story is remarkable and I'm glad that all finished good!
TFS,
Elena

hi Christian ,
i don't know how i landed on this pic of yours but ,after reading your story i understand .You did well to finish the walk, and i hope your friend was not too upset in having to quit .I am pleased it ended happily .
Your image conveys your story well ,an exhausted walker rests in the sun ,the composition is good and i love the one small cloud in a blue sky, with the mountains as a backdrop.
well done and take care
ollie

Hi Christian,
For me, this picture conveys two messages. The first being, as you say, a very tired and worn out man! The second, if I hadn't read your note, is a message of how most of us would want to live our lives, yet are too afraid... On top of the world, filled with adventure and reward for our undying passion to just live!
Kind regards,
Costa.

Hello Christian
This picture apart from the fact that is succesfully composed , it also has so much energy or better...plenty energy to give!!!
What a moment indeed!! I enjoy the story and the picture as well!

Congratulations for the goal you succeeded and for this memorial photo!!

Regards from Greece
Rene
