Photographer’s Note
Inachis Io
Our winged critters are beginning to come back now that the weather is improving. I was particularly pleased to get this chap, as I haven't photographed one before - when I got my camera late last summer, they were already scarce. I saw a few, but they wouldn't sit still long enough for a photo session..
There's no mistaking this butterfly with its 4 "eyes" on the wings for another species. Females are a bit bigger than the males and have yellow in and around the eyes. Males have a bit more pointed wings than the females. Wingspan 54-59 mm.
Where other butterfly species may have more than one generation in a year, the inachis io has only one. The new generation will hatch from mid July till late August. These butterflies winter and may then be seen from late March and onwards, depending on the weather.
Treatment: Slight crop, contrast +10, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Re: Mogens' comment: If by NI you mean NeatImage, then no. No smoothing was done on this photo ;-)

Excellent macro Bente. Very sharp, deep colours and nicely blurred background. Though it seems to me that you also added a slight NI - the wing texture looks very smooth but it is an excellent capture and the composition is perfect - congratulations with your first Inachis io.

C'est une très belle macro Bente. On voit bien les magnifiques couleurs et les détails du papillon. J'aime bien le flou en arrière plan qui porte le regard sur le sujet. Bravo. Nicely done.

Excellent capture of this fine "peacock" - the DOF great and the colours sharp and bright - thanks for sharing Bente and for the informative note.

Well Bente,
I captured yesterday exact the same butterfly, but I must say yours is better then mine. Good one, with beautifull colours, and good cropping.

You seem very busy, the D300 must be hot from all the shooting. Lovely little red lepidoptera. I would clone out that blob in the left corner. The colour is beautiful.

Very beautiful butterfly! It's wondeful! Maybe something in left corner in bottom distracts a little bit. But I like your photo very much. Excellent!

A very sharp clean image, DOF very well controled, if there is one very minnor nite ,it would be that the salix catkin its sat on should also be in focus but that is all the pecock is spot on.
