Seeing off the old, awaiting the new Photo

Photographer’s Note

A varm sunset, saying goodbye to the day and the country we came from and awaiting the new day and country.
I finally had my vacation, the first in 2 years!
I made and agreement with my old folks that if I paid some of the petrol and did the driving, they would supply me with free ferry ride over Skagerak. Well why not I though.

This photo was taken just before 10PM aboard the M/F Atlantic Traveller of the Fjordline company.
Beautiful evening, hardly any wind to make waves, it was simply a fantastic calm ride.

I decided to post this under Denmark as Hansthold was the closest port. The ride is a total of 7.5 hours and this was some 2.5 hours till we reached port.
It was the first time I played with ISO setting on my new camera and it actually turned out good.
Photo has had autolevels applied through Photoshop.
Pixel detail is 72.

Hello Odd Jarle,
I like this one. You did a fine job of capturing the nice colors of the sunset. If I understand you well, you were on a boat when you took this picture? It was a good idea to keep the persons there, it gives depth to your picture. There is a couple of things I would like to make you notice though. First, the horizon line is a bit tilted. Personnally, I think, it would have been even better if the haed of the person on the left was not covering the sun...Finally, there are a couple of stains in the sky, top right. It is probably caused by dust in the mechanism of your Canon. It happens all the time. When you zoom, unzoom, change lens, get the memory card out/in, you insert dust in the mechanism, which become stains in the picture. Just go see a retailer, they usually have technician who will do it for you in 5 minutes for almost nothing...

I'm seeing to spots on the top right side, why you didn't remove it with a editor?

Very nice and moodfilled photo, this must have been a comfortable crossing. I like the silhuettes, and the warm tones of the setting sun. Very nice composition. TFS.

P.S: You can verify if it is a sensor dust by shooting a white wall with very slow shutter speed & then see if the marks are appearing.
Most probably the look like Sensor dust.

Hi OJ. I'm again trying to catch up with my friend's postings. Now I continue from my last critique.

This is a very evocative shot, OJ! Warm and close. It brings memories to me, as we use to watch sunsets from a harbor near one of my infancy homeplaces.

I like the small girl the most, as she seems to be the only one actually watching the Sun. :)

Great idea! I only would close the aperture a little more to make the figures more silouetthed. But this works good here.
