View from Kastellet

Yesterday we had a very nice day with a lot of sunshine, so it was a good opportunity to take some photos. This picture was taken from the place in Copenhagen called Kastellet, looking towards Gefionspringvandet and The English Church.

Kastellet is one of the best preserved fortifications in Northern Europe. It is built in the form of a pentagram (this is well visible if you click on the map view in the photo information). The first parts are built in 1626 by King Christian IV. Originally there should be built a castle on this spot, but this plan was dropped due to economical reasons. In following periods the construction was rebuilt and extended. The fortification was named Citadellet Frederikshavn, but is better known as Kastellet (the Citadel).
Kastellet was renovated between 1989 and 1999.

The church you can see is as said Den engelske Kirke (The English Church) or the Saint Alban's Church. It was built between 1885-1887 and it belongs to the English community in Denmark. The church can also be seen here, together with Gefionspringvandet (Gefjun fountain). The fountain is about the legend of Gefion, please read more about this legend in the note of my other picture. The fountain is made by Anders Bundgaard in 1908.

In the background you can see the part of the harbour called Københavns Havn (Copenhagen Harbour).

I hope you like this photo!
