Frederiksborg Slot I

Here is the first picture of a new serie of Frederiksborg Slot (Frederiksborg Castle) in the city of Hillerød, Frederiksborg Amt. I went there yesterday, when the weather was fine. I took the train from Copenhagen to Hillerød.

Frederiksborg Slot is located on three small islands in Slotsøen (Castle Lake). It was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV (1577-1648). It is the largest renaissance castle in Scandinavia. The first parts were built by King Frederik II (1534-1588), Christian's father, and date back to 1560. Frederik II gave the castle also its name. However most of the current castle was built between 1602-1620 by Christian IV and designed by the Dutch Hans and Lorents van Steenwinckel. The castle is built in Dutch Renaissance-style, just as many other buildings in Copenhagen, that date back to Christian IV's time, like Børsen (Stock Exchange) and Rosenborg Slot.

After Christian IV's death, the castle was mainly used for ceremonies, especially to crown the Danish Monarchs. In 1720 Freden i Frederiksborg (Treaty of Frederiksborg) was signed here, that ended Den store nordiske krig (Great Northern War, 1700-1721), between Denmark-Norway and Sweden.
Nowadays the castle is used as a museum, Frederikborgmuseet (The Frederiksborg Museum) or Det Nationalhistoriske Museum (Museum of National History). This museum was founded in 1878 by brewer J.C. Jacobsen of the Carlsberg Breweries, who also funded the reconstruction of the castle after a large fire in 1859.

I took this picture around three 'o clock, when the sun already was setting after the sunny, but cold day.

Hoi Lars,
Zo krijgen wij alle kastelen te zien in Denemarken, en daar zijn blijkbaar wel zeer mooie bij, de zon was iets te ver verdwenen maar het is wel zeer goed weergegeven net iets buiten de klassieke zonnestand, maar dit wordt dan bijzonder gecompenseerd door de weerspiegeling, en vind dit wel mooi Lars!

Heerlijke avondzon op dit heerlijke kasteel dat al sinds 1969 in mijn herinnering staat. Samen met het "Hamlet" kasteel in Helsingør behoort het tot mijn dierbare herinneringen.

Great shot and great note too! The light on the castle is soft enough to show detail in the shadows, but strong enough to give a lot of definition in the building. Beautiful reflection too. It seems that you caught the perfect time of the day for this. Well done!

Ja dit is een prachtig kasteel, en zo op een afstand met deze reflectie badend in de lage zon ziet het er werkelijk prachtig uit. Misschien had ik de linker torentjes wat scherper gemaakt, maar toch vind ik hem heel mooi.

merveilleuses lumières, d'où découlent aussi de fantastiques couleurs, contraste entre les façades éclairées par le soleil et celles dans l'ombre, ce qui donne une belle impression de relief.

Hi Lars. That's funny there's a Fredericksburg near me which is where a lot of our Civil War took place in the 1860's. The smooth water sure allows for the mirror-like reflections. The awesome lighting is icing on the cake. Very nice one Lars!

The late afternoon light has created a magical ambience here. It has enhanced the orange tones of the building and provided strong contrasts. Lovely reflections in the in the water too.

A well made shot of this fine castle Lars. The best time for the photo with the warm light late in the day. And of course the reflection contributes greatly to the total impression.

Hi Lars,
I perfect image with a perfect lighting. Sunset at three 'o clock allways impresses me (I have three more hours of light and I complain about it...). In Portugal this would be more like a Palace. Our Castles are much diferent from this image.

The building is wonderful (I can picture my self spending there a great day exploring and lost my self in the enumerous rooms...) and the colours and reflections enhance very much the photo, specially the sunny façades. A superb capture!
