Photographer’s Note

Here is a photo of a part of Bulbjerg, the only bird cliff in Denmark, by the Northsea (called Westsea in Danish) in Northwestern Denmark.

Bulbjerg is 47 meters high and consist mainly of calcium and limestone and it the home of 3000-4000 breeding sea birds like Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and Fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis). The cliff used to be bigger, but it lost 18 meters during a storm in the seventies.

Bulbjerg was part of the German defence work during the Second World War and there is still is a small bunker in the top (fortunately, not too disturbing) and also some bunkers on the beach next to Bulbjerg.

For a nice photo of the whole of this area made in the air look here.

It was not easy to reach Bulbjerg, since no public transport is going that the cliff. I had to cycle 18 km from Fjerritslev, on stony, hilly and windy cylcepaths. And the birds were moving like crazy, fortunately it was quite sunny.

The photo is cropped a little bit by the top and left. I used the autocontrast and autolevels function, but then I decreased the light and contrast a tiny bit, because Photoshop made it too harsh. I made some lights spots on the hill darker, I sharpened the photo and warmified it a little bit.

How many birds do you see?
