The Vaigat is the long passage between the north-east side of Disko Island and the mainland. Many of the icebergs from the Ilulissat area may drift north through the north-west Vaigat passage and then spend several years in the northern Arctic before drifting south, being carried along by Baffin Island current and Labrador current.
Navigation, here, must be very careful. Boats can bump into growlers.
In Winter, those waters are transformed into a compact ice shelf.


Le Vaigat est un passage maritime, pas très large, situé entre l' est-nord est de l'île de Disko et la côte principale du Groenland.
C'est un lieu de passage permanent d'icebergs dérivant vers le nord, pour rejoindre la baie de Baffin. Ces icebergs sont " vêlés " par les grands glaciers qui bordent la baie de Disko.
La navigation, ici, doit être très prudente. Certains morceaux de glace ne sont pas forcément visibles ( growlers ).
En hiver, ces eaux se transforment en banquise totale.
