Photographer’s Note
This little ashlar stone church originates from 1200 and is located on a low hill between the small villages of Roellum and Stubbaek in South Jutland in the Danish-German border region. It is one of these typical small Danish village churches with a separate wooden bell tower. Except of the beautiful ashlars (I am a great admirer of medieval craft skills!), a wonderful Marcussen-organ from 1886 and the new lead roof from 1999 there are no further attractions worth mentioning. The main reason why I am posting this impression is the new access path to the church.
In 2006 the parish council was tasked by the Danish Health and Safety Executive to adapt this path to the needs of the disabled. Especially for the old ladies who are depending on a walker it was hard work using the old path. But also the morticians had problems getting the coffins into the church. Consequently the parish council instructed a landscape architect and the result of his efforts is furthermore also very well matching the style of the church.
Disabled people are excellently supported by all Danish administrations. And a “Disabled Peoples Organisations Denmark” was already founded in 1934.

Because I have a disabled daughter, I can appreciate what has been done here. The church is very lovely and I like the flowers in the fg. Good pov and the colors and detail are great. TFS

Bonjour Harriet

Hi Harriet,
As our friend Nicole, without a steeple, I was not imagine that it was a church !!! The cross on the gable would probably arouse my suspicions ... Beautiful and interesting photo on the building which enjoys a beautiful light. Harriet thank you for the interesting note.
With all my friendships and a great WE,

Hallo Harriet!

Hello Harriet,
A lovely note to go with this simple but picturesque image. Churches of this era were quite austere but exuded a certain charm as I can see from your photograph. In practical terms the new pathway is a welcome addition but I think the old flagstone style would have been much prettier. Compliments to the Danish administrators for having the foresight to establish an organization specifically for the disabled as far back as 1934, I wish the administrators here in Australia had been as progressive.
A lovely capture.

Hello Harriet,
original church! The building looks rather simple and definitely does not look like a church...
I have already seen something similarly unusual in Helsinki (it is their famous cave church hewn into a rocky outcrop - Temppeliaukio Church ("The Rock Church")).
Very pleasant photo: soft colour of the blue sky, quiet colour of the church; very good POV showing both the building and the path.. and also some greenery around it :) Quite a peaceful view!
Very interesting note, too!
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Harriet,
The lush green garden with its lovely flowers makes an excellent lead in to the sturdy lite stone church that contast beautifully with the vivid cloudless blue sky.
It is so good to read that the Danes were so far ahead of time in their concern for the diaabled.

Hello Harriet,
This is a clean piece of architecture without fancy details, so is the composition!
Good point of view lifts the church to the sky, and the building is captured with sharp fine details...
Fine diagonal lines and the good light makes the colours stand out well!

Harriet,
Very beautiful shot of this stone church with a nice access for the disable. Very good light for a good clarity photo and nice garden surrounding the church make it very charming and more attrative. I like the soft stone color on the wall with nice details and texture. Thanks

Olá Harriet, from what I see here, it seems that the landscape architect did a good job. It was a surprise to find out that this is a church and not the home of an inhabitant of the village. I mean, that roof and those windows are not architectural details expected in a church. I can see a tomb in this garden but that's it - no wooden bell tower at sight either ;-) Anyway, interesting and very well captured and presented from this angle.
warm regards,
ricardo

Bonjour, mon amie Harriet,

The little church looks relatively new considering it dates from 1200. It has been very well looked after and the path for the disabled is a very considerate new modification. Well composed image using perspective to lead the eye into the scene. The well-tended garden is also a good feature.

Hi Harriet,
From the first glance at this photo, I had the impression of something modern, then I read you excellent note. But what kind of roof wat it originally? Also the windows seem quite modern ;) But this is a very good and balanced composition, I like the way you have placed the line of the access path perpendicular to the lines of the roof. Also very good colours.

Nice choice dear friend, Harriet. I look at as visual information about the way how to built (I like to make the constructions in stones). The imagination of the others can help. Thanks for your contribution. Stay with you!

Hi, Harriet.
A fine composition, simple and effective, and I like that. Piercing angle, wonderful light, excellent definition, great complementary note : more than enough. And thanks for visiting Gold King Mine, one of the highlights of my latest USA Tour and... the weirdest for sure! Have a nice weekend, I'll see you soon.
Ciao,

Hello Harriet.
Not only is the new access path good for wheelchairs and undertakers, but it makes a nice diagonal lead-in to the photo. It is a rather austere little church, but when it comes to austere, we have some incredible examples of tiny and 'basic' churches here in the Australian bush, with no bell tower at all. I will have to post an example one day. Nevertheless, this one has a lovely well cared for garden and what looks like a new roof. Lovely photo, extremely well exposed. And your note, as usual, is very interesting.
regards,
Andrew

Bonjour Harriet,

Hello Harriet,
A very straightforward, uncomplicated composition; the picture taken from what seems to have been the ultimate spot, giving equal prominence to the building and the neat garden. It seems to have been a very lovely autumn day.

Hallo Harriet,

Bonjour Harriet,
It is surprising this zinc modern roof. But at the same time this mixture of ancient and modern is very successful because tints are very sweet.
Your note on the installations for the disabled persons in Denmark is very interesting. In France we are very late, I think that we have to be one of the most late countries in Europe. It is terrible.

Hello Harriet, Lovely old church with an equally nice garden & well captured. An excellent idea to cater for the disabled & one that is now practised in many parts of the world, I don't think we had in Australia such an organisation back in 1934. Not sure about the new LEAD roof, here they tell us it is a health hazard but I guess being out of people's reach it is safe.
Lovely shot, interesting & informative note, thank you
