Photographer’s Note

With its long coastline and many small islands, Denmark is often called “the country of ferries”. Denmark has more than 400 islands most of them connected to the mainland by ferries.
The two legendary Ox-Islands with an amazing flora and a rich animal life are located in the Firth of Flensburg (Flensburg Fjord). In the summer season there is hourly sail to the Big Ox-Island (Store Okseø) from the place Sønderhav, but when you ring a bell at the bridge, this yellow boat arrives immediately. Only four constant inhabitants live on this island, the smaller Lille Okseø is uninhabited and owned by the Danish Teacher’s Associaton which has established a summer school (the white building in the background).
The islands are an ideal anchorage for sport boats, and on the Big Ox-Island there is also a small port and a very small shipyard since the Flensburg Fjord is one of the most famous sailing areas in Northern Europe. The restaurant “Øens Kro” (the Islands Inn) has been a very popular place because it was really “hyggelig”, this special mix of cosiness, comfort and warmth that is so typical for Denmark. And the fried eel was a treat! But some years ago the owner died and today the four inhabitants (they are Germans from Flensburg) collectively try something new and quite different: arranging concerts, exhibitions and lectures at “Øens Kro”.
The skipper has just finished his hard day’s work, bringing tourists to the Big Ox-Island and before he takes home again he is enjoying a “hyggelig” small talk with the other man.

A very pleasant view, maybe it's not so much fun here in the winter. A great atmosphere and fine colours. Don't tell anyone, but the yellow boat against the blue water looks almost Swedish ;-)

Hello Harriet,

I do enjoy reading your notes.
I seem to know so little about Denmark, having only visited it once, many years ago!

This is a beautiful scene, lovely colours and a fine ambience. The jetty, with its subdued colours and rough textures, contrasts so well with the smooth, sllek boat.
The inclusion of the people is important. It defines scale, gives a specific focal point and, we are so interested to discover what they are saying!

The colours are vibrant and the light is good. There are some attractive reflections in the water too. You have composed the image well placing the walkway on a diagonal, and of course the gossiping men add interest.

Very cosy atmosphere. Staying on a little island keeps hurries away efficiently. Very well kept but old fashioned looking boat. Yellow catches attention and it's nice to see people chatting on the pier.

I like the way the row of the clouds matches the row of the trees in the background, as if copying the diagonal line of the trees. Nice colours and good composition.

It is a very beautiful image with pleasant landscape, the interaction of the men talking make this one more intimate and personal. Technically very good, good composition and color and light well balanced. Love the green forest as you backgrop. Very naturally beautiful.

Continent of Europe that I will like one day to visit, I am really attracted by his landscapes.
