Today I would like to show you something you do not expect in Denmark, the terrible decay of a place that once was one of these nice little cozy harbours along the Danish Baltic coast.
Mommark harbour is located on the eastern coast of the Danish island of Als that lies east of the Jutland peninsula and north of the German coast at the Little Belt. It was from 1922 until 1967 the port for the connection between Als and Funen and today is still the ferry port to the island of Ærø but only in the months of summer. It is beautifully located next to a pleasant bathing beach that is popular with windsurfers. But changing areas of responsibilities have caused serious problems concerning the maintenance of the constructions of the harbour: the wooden bridges are rotten and it is highly dangerous to use them. The inland waterway is sanded and consequently the ferry grounded in November 2006; the passengers had to leave the boat by using a steel ladder. First two days later they could get their cars. The refrigerator truck can only be called a wreck. And the boat in the foreground, Henriette of Mommark (SÖ 13) is an elderly lady still ramming wooden piles in the bottom of the sea for fixing fishing nets.
Politicians are in charge to get money but they are also discussing the possibility to move the ferry from Mommark to Fynshav, the already existing ferry port to the island of Funen.

Hej Harriet

Ever now and then do I visit the island Ærø but seldom with ferrie from Mommark - only once actually due to a strike at the other ferries and a party which we wanted to take part in.
This sad remainer of the Danish fishing fleet seems to used for the purpose of putting fishing stake in the seaground for pound net fishing.

Thanks for the fine note to follow the image.

Venlig hilsen
Jeppe

Bonjour Harriet,
Cheers.
Daniel.

hello Harriet
I like the contrast between the clean abdsoft landscappe with the old boat and its rough texture,do you understand what I mean, difficult to explain in english! The colours and the luminosity are superb, and its perfectly framed!
Regards.
Pascale

Hello Harriet, You really are on the opposite end of the world to me. Nice scene with excellent natural colour, Good POV catching all of the boat on it's side showing it in good detail. Something is rotten but the air is nice & clean. Your note is interesting & informative. Thank you
Regards
Santo

Well done, Harriet - your picture as well as your note!
You've got some really strong lines in this shot and marvellous colors.
Have a nice summer!
Best wishes, Jan

Hi Harriet,
Interesting example of a place that's been set off the main traffic flows. Sleepy feeling even on a nice summer day. Texture on the side of that old ship looks interesting. Rust always catches my attention.
Kari

Hello Harriet.
I like this colorful shot, expecially the clouds passing across the sky and the perspective of these boats.
The note is very interesting too.
Kind regards.
Bobo.

Bonjour,
belle photo de ces bateaux amarrés qui sont très beaux.
Le premier a la coque bien abimée,par le sel sans doute.
Bien bel endroit que l' on voudrait visiter, on le fait un peu grâce a vous.

Amitiés Thomas

Hi Harriet,
The combination of a good and note and a good picture is always unbeatable here on TE! As you, I really like these marine photos, water always bring life to a motive. You have a very good composition here with these diagonal lines, and the poles are also an important part!
Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Hi Harriet,

Firstly thank you for the interesting note on the history for this port. As for the photograph, I like much your point of the sight on the ships. I find that you managed the light well what gives quite pleasant natural colors. Beautiful work, Harriet cheer.

With all my friendships and a very good evening,

hi Harriet

Very nice view of this lovely place and good sharpness, contrast in your capture, showing the frames fit onto the boat for piling work. It looks like clean water. Interesting note.

tfs, bill

Hello Harriet,

The clarity of your shot is amazing!
You have chosen a good pov with the boat as the focal point. The light is good and there are just enough spots of bright colours to make this lively without overpowering it.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Harriet,

I love old boats, even if rotten. It makes a nice composition, only spoilt a bit by the white container to the right. Good clarity and saturation.
Greetings,
Donato

Philippe

excellent light/brightness, beautiful colours and textures, well framed, a nice cludy sky in bonus

Hi Harriet

Must be the fish or cheese that smells, lol. The boats in Sth East Asia look like this, too. Sad to see in a 1st world country like Denmark, though. Tfs!

Hallo Harriet
It's surprising to see this from Danmark.
But TE must show everything from our world, even not nice things.
By the other hand, the photo has very nice light and even colors.
Greetings,
F

Bonjour Harriet
Une très belle composition avec un excellent cadrage et j'apprecie beaucoup les petits nuages dans le ciel qui donnent une belle dimension à l'ensemble très réussi, bravo à toi!

Harriet,
Very informative note regarding this place.
Looking at the photo, it seems like it woudl be a cozy and charming harbor, things change whether we like it or not sometimes. That when we capture and preserved it with our camera, it won't be the same but...
Great shot with really good composition, good sharpness and clarity, color and light is nicely balanced, well done.

Harriet, you certainly have the seaman's eye. I love the way you visualize these port scenes, you show (to me anyway) an understanding of the craft. As for your comment about the decay, I think that is universal. Seems we are past the generation where people invested in and maintained infrastructure, now it is about the immediate profit, ROS or ROI, and I hate it. It is noticeable in your picture tho it is picturesque, and it a constant battle in my occupation which is building and maintaining jet aircraft. Fine shot you have shown us and a great note to accompany it.

Hello Harriet,
I'd like to join the chorus of viewers of the photo:)
A very apt title, the image of a rusty old boat and the note make a perfect one whole picture.
It's a sad story for the boat... which used to be beautiful some time ago.
Technically, the photo simply perfect.
TFS :)
Elena

there are two factors which make most of your photos successful .perhaps one is that the weather in denmark is always convenient for photography the sky seems very clear and the tone of blue is great.

Hi Harriet,
Beautiful shot of these old boat anchored in this little harbor. The lights and colors are well balanced and attractive, and you captured some interesting reflections of the boats. Good job! Regards, Consuelo

Hello Harriet,

I like much this composition on this old tub. The image is well composed and the colors returned naturally well.
Good work.

Hi

Superbe picture good

Hello Harriet,

This is a fine harbour scene, but I have to admit I find the boat in front a bit destroyed by the additional kind of equipment!
But at least there is a fine summer atmosphere, with blue sky and lovely fluffy clouds...
A good photo documentary!

Pablo -
