Photographer’s Note
In Denmark, the traditional New Year's Eve menu is steamed codfish with potatoes and all sorts of side dishes like chopped, boiled eggs, pickled beets, capers, horseradish, onions and mustard sauce. But unfortunately it becomes more and more difficult to obtain fresh fish, especially cod. To meet massive international demand for cod, competing fishing fleets empty the sea floor using highly efficient dragnets. Consequently, cod stocks are at their lowest ever level. In fact, the numbers are so bad, scientists are no longer even sure of the species' population dynamics.
When we were looking for fresh cod in the harbors of the Danish-German Border Region on 30th December it was always the same sight we met: empty boats and fishermen like this gentleman in Egernsund who had tried in vain to catch fish. So it was with great frustration we went home again.

Hi Harriet,
Sorry to hear about the poor supply of Christmas fish! You should try the dried fish (lutfisk) that is common in both Norway and Sweden for Christmas. Maybe it is not cod, but ling. But with or without fish, this is a very attractive picture with these white, red and blue colours! And down in the right corner I think I can see something! Is it the back fin of a shark?
Best regards

Hallo Harriet!

Hi Harriet,
I like very much the disposal of these boats. An interesting centring where the vertical and horizontal lines play together. The wintry light is very well got.
I wish you a very happy new year full of colors and discoveries.

Hello Harriet,
It's clear that fish, and the availability of the various species, is a topic that fascinates a lot of people. And while scientists and the politicians in Brussels argue about how long we should stop fishing for cod, or where we shouldn't fish, the stocks seem to go so low that there soon won't be any need for a discussion. Anyway, the local politicians always seem to protect their fishing industries at any cost.
Regardless of that, this is a fine picture with nice lines and splendid colours.
And your notes are really among the best and most informative on TE. Thank you
Regards,
Gert

No fish maybe, but you`ve still fished up a good photo with a nice motive. The scene is well composed and peaceful. I also like the note - it makes me kinda hungry. :)

Hi Harriet,
Love the glassy blue of the water here and the tranquil reflection in its riffling surface.
Clear crisp colors and razor sharpness to this fine coastal image.
As few as 15 years ago every port in New England would have pleasure boats going out deep sea fishing for cod and haddock but sadly today there is only one such port.

Hi Harriet!
Very important note, with some very worried facts, things like that happen in other countries, too! It's time to reconsider are relationship with nature, before it's too late! The photo, although the posture of the fisherman is sad, is a beautiful one! Great framing and composition, excellent light managment! Congratulations!

Hello Harriet, A wonderful & pleasant image with excellent colour, clarity & reflections to add interest. Your note tell of a story no so pleasant especially for the fishermen who make their living out of catching fish, even though it is sad to hear that traditional fishing spots are now almost without fish, we must wonder why.
Thank you

Bonjour Harriet,
Cheers.

Hi Harriet,
well...the fisherman did not manage to capture a fish but it gave you an opportunity to capture wonderful photo. And you did.
I like very much warm light and shadows of the pier drawing themselves on the boat which makes lovely contrast to otherwise pale winter scenery. The fisherman in red is a great bonus and pops out of most wonderful blue and white harmony excellently.
I would probably cropped out the upper part...just below boats on the other side. Of course I would lose a lot of information of the scenery but it would make the boat stand out even more. I don't know, maybe?
All in all it is wonderful as it is and I do envy you having such scenery so close to your home.
All the best in 2009,
Jeri

Hello Harriet,
I am back home at last, but there are so many photos to look at! Today I've started a long trip about TrekEarth :)
I like this boat, and I like the title to the photo! Very good composition and a nice combination of two colours: blue/bluish and red (although not very much of it).
The weather looks cold!
"No milk today...!" :) But maybe we should pity the fish a little? from time to time...
I used to go fishing in my childhood... but later I quit it... for the sake of fish :)
Kind regards,
and my best wishes to you!

Hi Harriet, Your photo has excellent clarity of color. The red of the trim on the boat and the fisherman's oilskins provides good contrast with the blues. The story is sad and is occurring in many areas. There has been a ban on Cod fishing in Newfoundland for 16 years with little noticeable impact. HLJ, Pat

I live on the North Sea coast and the fishing industry has been decimated as much because of the quotas the government introduced to help prevent over-fishing. I don't know if other countries have done the same.
The fisherman in the picture seems to be tipping up an empty bucket as if to demonstrate the point you make in your note. You had lovely winter light and there are some beautiful reflections.

Hi Harriet,
While making very with excess, we will run to our loss !!! Difficult for the small independent fishermen to earn correctly their life against industrial fishing. A beautiful photograph illustrating this subject, I like much contrasts of the image and the reflection in the foreground. Thank you Harriet for the note.
With all my friendships and a very good evening,

Hello Harriet,
The touches of bright red make this a very successful shot. This picture has attracted an advertisement for '1000's of cod recipes' - but where are the thousands of codfish? - not on our coasts any more!!
I always enjoy your boat 'portraits'
Best wishes....Maggie

the fish has not been captured but you have captured this beautiful image with some pleasant reflexes. The quality of this photo is excellent, the perfect sharpness and the good saturation of the colors create a suggestive view of this small port. Good work, compliment!

Hello Harriet,
This is a really sharply focussed shot illustrating everything in the clearest of details.
There is much of interest to study.
I particularly like how the low sun has created shadows which play on the side of the f/g boat.
The reflections are also pleasing.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi, Harriet.
Crisp, moody and colorful in a most intimate way, and featuring a lovely display of wintery light. Too bad about the fish shortage, but unfortunately things will only get worst in every possible respect. This whole planet can PROPERLY feed and house 2,5 billion people, period. We are now 6 billion and growing...
Thanks again for yesterday's visit to my Tin Cup, much appreciated. And... Happy New Year to you and your family! Have a nice evening, I'll be seeing you soon.
Fulvio.

Hi Harriet.
Very colourful well lit scene, with the winning touch of the duck and its ripples in the bottom right corner. I like the red colour of the man's overalls and boat's trim, and the slightly hazy background of the other side of the river. Nice shot indeed.

Hi Harriet,
The foreground boat might be too centered and thus blocks the view but the succeeding plans give depth, there is bit of action going on and good highlights on the boats.
Have a nice day JY

Hi Harriet,
Very nice shot, boat is centered however, it make an interresting diagonale with the other boat at the right of the photo, it also give a focus on the fisherman scene.
I like also the boat reflection on the water; great image.

The reflection is excellent as the sky and the colours coming out beautifully broken by the ripples. A very idyllic atmosphere portrayed here with a good note as well about cod fishing. The duck in the FG adds to the scene. Good work!
