Photographer’s Note

The world famous architect Frank Gehry (his creations include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles!) has agreed to draw up a master plan for an entirely new sustainable district on the Northern Sønderborg waterfront. The plan was presented to the public on 31. October 2008 by him at Alsion (my previous post: spirit of optimism).
The Sønderborg Harbor Masterplan proposes to transform the former industrial waterfront into a vibrant urban development.Hopefully the once so distinctive Ewers Warehouse will survive this process. It was built in 1909 at the time when Southern Jutland was a part of the German Empire. The warehouse was designed by the famous Prussian architect Eugen Fink with its facades facing the street and the water, allowing for direct access for ships. It matched the style of the barracks (the tower in the background belongs to it) that had been constructed in 1906-1909 for a large navy station in Sønderborg housing the German ocean fleet.
At first I thought of “Agony” as a title for this image. But I trust in Frank Gehry’s plan and in the citizens of Sønderborg who are very keen to keep the warehouse, although it always will remind them of a very sad part in Danish history.
I wish you all a Peaceful and Happy New Year 2009!
