Photographer’s Note
The world famous architect Frank Gehry (his creations include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles!) has agreed to draw up a master plan for an entirely new sustainable district on the Northern Sønderborg waterfront. The plan was presented to the public on 31. October 2008 by him at Alsion (my previous post: spirit of optimism).
The Sønderborg Harbor Masterplan proposes to transform the former industrial waterfront into a vibrant urban development.Hopefully the once so distinctive Ewers Warehouse will survive this process. It was built in 1909 at the time when Southern Jutland was a part of the German Empire. The warehouse was designed by the famous Prussian architect Eugen Fink with its facades facing the street and the water, allowing for direct access for ships. It matched the style of the barracks (the tower in the background belongs to it) that had been constructed in 1906-1909 for a large navy station in Sønderborg housing the German ocean fleet.
At first I thought of “Agony” as a title for this image. But I trust in Frank Gehry’s plan and in the citizens of Sønderborg who are very keen to keep the warehouse, although it always will remind them of a very sad part in Danish history.
I wish you all a Peaceful and Happy New Year 2009!

Bonjour Harriet
Un bon cliché net et coloré avec un bon format choisi. La présence du personnage et du vélo donnent de l'animation à l'image.
Je te souhaite une très bonne année 2009 ainsi qu'à tes proches.

A Happy New Year to you too, Harriet!
Interesting note and an interesting architecture here. Should be very exciting to see something like the Bilbao Museum or Disney Consert Hall here. Who knows what it will be?

Hallo Harriet!

Hello Harriet,
I can understand the wish to keep this warehouse, which obviously once was a very fine building. It still is, but like so many decaying old buildings it has received a quite different character with a certain beauty of its own. It will be ineresting to see what this area will look like in 10 years or so.
As always a very well written and informative note.
I wish you all the best for 2009.

Hello My Friend,
Very interesting architecture with a quite distinctive style.
I hope, like you, that the developers will be far-sighted enough to include this in the renovations. Nowadays, people seem to be aware that historical sights create more interest to visitors.
I wish tou all the very best for the New Year and look forward to your new posts,
Bev :-)

Hello Harriet,
I like old buildings that show the weathering process, but moreso, when they reveal that other buildings were attached to them. The colors and texture are beautiful in this well composed shot, and the accompanying note is first rate. You've chosen a good angle to depict the building, with clear two-point perspective (the orthogonals converge at a pair of vanishing points located on the horizon line.
I wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Hello my dear fiend Harriet,
I myself personally hope this heritage warehouse will survive the modern development from the plan! this sort of thing also happening here in NZ for the sake of keeping heritage from the past just to give way to the modern era!
I loved the pov to see the height and original stage of the warehouse!

Hi Harriet,
This lovely old Danish architecture is seen in all it fine textures and sharp details as it stands out brilliantly against vivid blue sky with its lovely wispy clouds.
Love the bit of blue from the sky reflecting rain puddles belows.
Happy New Year to You and Your Family.

Hi Harriet,
a very well documented situation and nicely depcited towwnship. Soft blue sky and pleasant red and brownish buildings complemet each other. Lighting is well exploited and human figure adds meaning to the shot.
Good presentation of the title.

Bonjour Harriet,
From Namur.

It definitely needs some TLC, but the unusual lines of the architecture certainly indicate there should be a place for it in the new scheme. You chose your POV well so we can see two of the facades of the building. I like the inclusion of the man and his(?) bike. Maybe he is taking notes for the future. ;D

Harriet,
This is a fine shot of the rusting and historical architecture. I looks abandoned but a good photography subject. I can imagine this would look also very nice in black & white to give it that timeless quality and charm. The inclusion of the person and a bike give this image a bit more warm and liveliness, not so lonely and discarded. Thanks Harriet.

Hi Harriet,
It is true that it would be a shame to destroy this warehouse which is part from now on of the history of the place. I am sure that the architect will have a good inspiration to make revive these old walls. In all the cases you found the good visual angle to photograph the building which contrasts well with this blue sky. The presence of the character brings a good complement to the photograph. Well done and interesting photo.
With all my friendships, I present to you like with all your family all my best wishes for the New Year's Day,

Hello Harriet,
after visiting Denmark (though for a very short while) I made sure what strange architecture styles building have there! and, of course, the colours...
Strangely, Danish houses (and other various kinds of buildings) seemed to me like strange pre-historic animals (and this house in this photo, too)... is it because of their shape and sizes...? Maybe this comparison may seem strange to you, but this is just my imagination and perception of a painter :)
In any case, it is a very interesting photo. And I like the idea of comparing the huge house and the small man with his (?) bike!
Wishing you all the very best!

Hi Harriet,
When I look at the picture I think the place needs an upgrade. Remarkable choice for Frank Gehry to make a master plan. Although you don’t show us this building from its best side, I understand why you hope it will survive. The best of old and new often gives amazing results, so I hope your wish comes true.

Hello Harriet
Your notes are always so interesting full of information! You show the old warehouse weathered & battered...the colors and texture are beautiful in this well composed shot. A good angle to depict the shot with twin perspective. The man & the bicycle are important for scale. Well done!
