Sønderborg, like many European cities, has a rich cultural history – 750 years in fact. The town is located in South Jutland in the Danish German border region. It is a modern city with an international flavor, especially in the fields of technology and education. The community (Sønderborg is home to 80 different nationalities in a population of some 76,000 people) experiences a rapid and positive evolution with an increasing number of employment opportunities, low unemployment and expansion in population.
To meet the growing needs a new university facility to house the South Danish University, a concert hall and a research park has been completed in 2007. This architectural marvel is Europe’s newest university facility. It is called Alsion and beautifully situated overlooking Als Sund. Alsion’s aim is to establish a frequent collaboration and knowledge sharing between the public educational sector and the private research sector. The building is broken down into several volumes- those with short gable ends alternate with atria buildings. It has a lot of casual meeting points, so students and scientists can get together and exchange knowledge. The entire ground floor with common facilities is open to everyone.
Alsion will be a magnet for audiences seeking an experience above the ordinary. The concert hall (Europe’s most modern) will form the venue for activities ranging from classical concerts to avant-garde music and rhythmic rock. Due to its flexibility, lectures, conferences, fashion shows, theatre plays and other cultural events can also be staged. The many culture lovers have much to look forward to; and I am already enjoying this place!
