Photographer’s Note

This view is to the north from the 27 m tower of the Ribe Domkirke (cathedral).

Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark having flourished during the Viking era as a center for trade between the Frankish empire and the Scandinavian states. Ribe's prominence may have peaked in the 12th century when the Valdemar dynasty fortified the city and built a castle to serve as one of the king's residences in Jutland. Construction of the Ribe cathedral, one of the more impressive buildings in Jutland, was begun in 1150.

Ribe's significance declined in the medieval period owing to a large fire in 1580, ongoing wars between Denmark and Sweden (which choked trade), silting of the local river, and, in the middle of the 19th century, the founding of Esbjerg as the local port city.

The decline in the town's fortunes is one reason why it is considered an excellent place to visit today, as the old town is in a very good state of preservation.
