...Here's another photo from Moesgaard Museum . This time I have chosen to show you two runic stones ( one is in the workshop).
Five (!) runic stones were found in Aarhus . More than in any other Danish city .
Experts say that all five stones are from the period between 970 and 1025 , the age of Vikings !
This photo shows the most famous of them all : the one with the mask , which has become the logo of the museum.
The mask must have had a specific meaning in pagan rituals , for instance to protect against evil spirits
since it is also found on other runic stones and artefacts from The Viking Age.

The inscription says :

" Gunulv and Ogot and Aslak raised this stone after their companion Ful. He found death....while kings were fighting"

Runic stones were expensive so they were only raised in memory of significant people .
Since as many as five stones were found in Aarhus
( Aros was the name in ancient times )it must have been a very important and wealthy town during The Viking Age.
