Photographer’s Note

Ishnura elegans violacea or Blue-tailed damselfly, a female of the species. Female ishnura elegans come in 5 different colour varieties, blue, violet, green, rose and brown, and this - as you may have guessed already - is the violet female form.
Blue-tailed damselfly has a body length of 30-33 mm and a wingspan of 33-37 mm, so this photo probably represents some 2 x 2 cm in actual size. It's a hardy species, and also one that is present for a long time during the season - they fly early, and they finish flying pretty late in the season, too.
This species matures very quickly, it only takes 4-6 days from coming out of the larvae shell and until it's sexually mature and will start breeding (haven't seen that yet this year, though). The males are pretty territorial, for which reason there aren't that many of them in any one locality. The male will sit on a plant and guard his territory against other males of the same breed and try to scare them off, should any arrive. Females are also chased, but for quite another reason ;-))
Treatment: Crop, contrast +10, brightness +5, saturation +10, USM.
