Photographer’s Note
My first time this far up north. Came back to the hostel in the beginning of the evening. Beautiful night - stars shining all over the sky. Suddenly I saw this green light, moving across the sky. A fantastic scenery - northern light!
I had no tripod, so I had to find something to put my camera on to get this! Found a concrete circle at the bottom of a drying rack. But I had to put something under the lense to get the lens up. All I had was my gloves. I took the one glove off, and put it under the camera. I had to take som shots to get the rigth one. As you can see, each shot took 30 seconds. And when I had taken 4 shots, I couldn´t feel my fingers any more. The temperature was almost minus 20 degrees celcius, and a quite windy. The fingers where gone... The next 30 minutes I couldn´t feel anything. And then I discovered that I had forgotten to change the white-balance from my last indoor-pictures just before...So the colors where totally wrong.
After all, my fingers where finally back - and I HAD to get a picture of this scenery.
This time I kept the gloves on...

Hello, Per -
I'm not surprised you were willing to freeze your fingers to get a great picture; that's what photographers do. I am amazed that you managed a 30-second exposure with no star trail. (Or maybe it takes a couple of minutes for trails to show?) Anyway, it is a fantastic shot, and you are fortunate to have spotted the WB setting in time to get it right. Good positioning of the town, too; it gives a sense of scale and location.

Dan

Hi there, wow this phenomenon is really impressive! I'd love to see it once! Nice to have included the houses in the picture as they give a scale!
Well done, Léonie

What a great shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a big northern lights fan! I went all the way to tromso a few years ago just to see if i could see northern lights and I did. IT was the most amazing form of nature one can experience. I had no idea how to capture the lights using my crappy camera at the time. And i was too busy screaming off my lungs!!
love your notes about this picture, glad your fingers are OK!! :D
