Photographer’s Note
Harbour of Uummannaq seen as the ferry boat is leaving it at the low light of 22:00h. on its southbound journey. We were able to disembark during the northbound leg for a few hours in mid morning to explore the village. It is built on typical solid granite found all over Greenland. It is very difficult to dig anything, so buildings are constructed on stilts, and all pipes are above ground. Pasted below is information on Uummannaq taken from the Uummannaq Tourist Service:
Uummannaq is situated 590 km north of the Polar Circle at 70° 40'N and 58° 08' W on an island which covers 12 square km, and is dominated by the 1175 m high mountain "Hjertefjeldet", which means "Heart-shaped Mountain", after which the city is named.
Up where the sun does not set for 2 months every year, but on the other hand does not rise from December to February!
Uummannaq is what you would call the "real" Greenland. A majestic and harsh landscape with tall mountains, rare vegetation, many glaciers and icebergs, and a population to whom fishing and hunting by dog sledge and boat is a natural part of daily life.
The district of Uummannaq has 7 settlements and is a very typical dog sledging district. The 2784 inhabitants live mainly by hunting and fishing.
Uummannaq is one of Greenland's northernmost municipalities. 2,800 people live here. Approx. half of them in one of the 7 settlements.
The town is surrounded by islands and peninsulas, up to 2,000 meters high.
The sea around Uummannaq is rich in whales, and impressive icebergs can be seen everywhere, ice mountains in shades of blue and white, with fantastic shapes. They stem from the world's fastest moving glacier, originating from the inland ice.

But the composition and your POV really stand out.

Hi Tan,
It's gonna be difficult to write something meaningful after so much (fully justified) praising. This photo is one of the best I've ever seen here, much has already been written about excellent composition, light, sharpness, colors etc... I'd like to add that I'm bluffed by the great clarity and knowing from your intro it's a scan I find it even more impressive !
May I ask which scanner you use and what PP you do ?
Thanks for posting this jewel and have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Wow - You captured a very fine and special image from our northern most state of Denmark - I like the way the landscape very fine and sharp from the front to the horizon and the composition with ice and a ship arriving - thanks Tan for this fine work and the note to give us the life of Greenland.

What a beautiful view you have captured here. It is very unusual for almost all of us to see this combination of nature elements, the high mountain so close to the sea, the colourful village at the edge of this blue water, little icebergs, and all that covered with an impressive sky that seems goes by very quickly. Great colours and composition. The entire boat also adds more infrmation about their lives. TFS it is a very good shot. brgds Tan

I'm not much for landscape photography unless it is really well done. this is one of those shots that shows the beauty of the place along w/ some cultural aspect. Not only that, it is very well composed and tecnically great. My only very small critique would be to darken the boat a bit w/ a leves or curves adjustment and then erase back the rest of the image so it stays the same?
Thanks for sharing.

Tan, merci pour le voyage. C'est une merveille de lumière et de reflets dans cette eau glacée. Ce rocher qui semble protéger les habitations semble avoir des traces d'érosion. Le bateau tout en couleur fait un point d'équilibre.

Hello Tan, it's always fun to have a random stroll through your gallery - I know I will find lots of interesting stuff. Here the low light on the mountain and the boat bring out the colours well with good saturation. The composition of the boat entering the frome from the right heading towards the town on the left is pleasing. But most of all it's a fascinating picture and note.

Hi Tan. This was labelled 'Denmark' on your front page, but I just knew it had to be Greenland with the clear air that you can just feel in this - and see for miles. Perfectly composed and lovely light, although I do think you might have tweaked the sharpening a touch too hard on this one as I can see the start of some halo effect around the mountain just above the houses. But it's very minor and certainly doesn't detract from the overall impact of this image. Cheers . . . David
