Photographer's Note

Assaqutaq is an abandoned village close to Sisimiut area.
The settlement is today used as summer camp for the local public schools. In June it is a busy place when the inhabitants from Sisimiut go fishing for the capelin.

In the 60ties and 70ties small settlements around Greenland were abandoned because danish government obliged Inuit people to move to bigger towns to work and " enjoy " the modern facilities ( schools, water-supply, transports, healthcare system...).

At that time, this " new way of life " has not been so well accepted by Inuit people who were traditional
nomad travellers. They were not used to live into council blocks.
