Photographer’s Note
Another picture from the Braedet market in Nuuk.
Kittiwakes are a migratory sea bird in the gull family. They breed in large colonies on sea cliffs.
It is paradoxical that Greenland has some of the least polluted air and water, yet the highest concentration of heavy metal pollutants (POPs) occurs in Kittiwakes because the birds spend the winter on the coast of North America.
This is a problem because these birds are still a part of the Greenlander's diet. In the West Greenlandic Inuit language, traditional food is called kalaalimineq. Imported food is called Qallunaamineq (from Qallunaaq 'a Dane').
Some Kittiwake colonies are declining mainly as a result of the shortages of some fish on which they feed.
