......From 1923 to 1961 (!) these buildings - well hidden , but well known - housed " morally disabled women ".
The background was eugenic and hygienic ideas of incidence of bad genetic material , birth of degenerated children , fear of decreasing sexual moral and incidence of VD in society etc.
Diagnostic code words were : degenerated , psychopathic loose , criminal and mentally disabled.
The women's institution on Sprogoe implied a number of paradoxes :
It was not a hospital , but the women were considered to be ill .
It was not a prison , but the women were isolated indefinitely .
Great store was set by the "freedom" they had on the island - yet they were imprisoned..... |
