Photographer’s Note

This is another shot of Rørvig church. I love places where people worship and conveniently Denmark is filled with photogenic churches.

This church was first built in 1200-1250 and there is a theory that there was some type of community around it at that time. Later it came to stand quite alone and only recently got neighbors, in the form of summer houses. The town of Roervig lies almost 2 km. east of here and closer to the water. After the church was built back in 1200, it was later added onto in preceding generations until it reached its current form about 150 years ago.

The distinctive yellow color is not normal for churches in Denmark and indeed this is one of the few in the country that is this color. The color seems to date from about the time the steeple (bell tower) seen in the left of this picture was built. Otherwise the form of this church is quite normal with a high square steeple facing west, a narthex (entrance) facing south, and the alter facing east. Here is a view of the whole church.
