Almost Mediterranean Photo

Photographer’s Note

Falsled, a hamlet with 650 inhabitants, is nicely situated across the Little Belt waterway on the bucolic island of Funen. In summer the atmosphere is almost Mediterranean. (By the way: Denmark is a relatively fertile, mild and populated country, thus the Danes are a relatively relaxed, smiling and communicative people who do not take themselves too seriously. They are the "Mediterraneans of the North".)
The harbour, which is well protected from the wind, is not only full of life during the short yachting season; as you can see many weekend fishermen also keep their boats here. The catches consist mainly of flounders and eels for their families, friends and acquaintances.
The village enjoyed a period of prosperity in the nineteenth century when large numbers of yachts and schooners were built directly on the beach near the present yachting harbour although this seems hard to imagine today. Falsled then was a real sailor’s town. Houses that still exist today were built for the boat owners, seamen, master shipbuilders and their employees.
Today Falsled is very well known for the building with the thatched roof on the right side behind the large tree, the Falsled Kro. Not only is this Funen Island’s finest accommodation, but also it’s the quintessential Danish inn, with origins going back to the 1400s. It is now a stellar inn, one of the restaurants on the top of Danish gastronomy.

Sommer vom Feinsten! Ein einladendes Bild, das wirklich Ruhe und irgendwie Gelassenheit ausstrahlt. Das absolut ruhige Wasser verstärkt diesen Eindruck.
Der Himmel ist hier ein großer Pluspunkt!

Hi Harriet,
I like this composition, you have a strong diagonal line in those poles up to the tree to the right. That orange roof is well placed and a good eyecatching detail. The cloudy sky looks very typical for this summer, where there seems to have been more rain than sunshine, at least further north!

With the very best intentions this might be called Mediterranean ;-)
But whatever, it's a good picture of fine little boats nicely lined up and seen from a suitable POV. The red and beige poles are attractive elements and hold the composition together.

Hi Harriet,
probably this looks almost Mediterranean, but to me it looks also typically Scandinavian :) I always like to see rows of boats (sometimes very colourful, sometimes only white) on water, and each time this gives a special "fresh" feeling. No wonder!
Hmm... thanks to the reflection in the water (in the bottom left corner) it's possible to see more of the blue sky ;)
I like the composition and the perspective in general. It must be a pleasure to walk around!

This is a charming marina, nothing fancy just practical everyday boats for some fishing and pleasure...

The addition of greenery prevents this from being Mediterranean. We northerners pay the price for the greenery with the rain. ;D Anyway is is a beautiful picture; Mediterranean or not. The parallel diagonals are good in the composition, and the house in the background is also a good feature of the image.

Malgré le ciel lourd, les bateaux sont prêts à reprendre leur mission : promenade et dépaysement. Un petit contrôle général de sécurité (moteur, matériel de sauvetage, etc.) et hop en route pour la découverte.

a nice picturesque port of Falsled,to be full of boats.I cannot agree with you about the Mediterranean appearance of the scene.The grey sky and the grass is something unusual for Greece at least.

Its hard to believe that this is in Denmark as the cloudy summer sky looks like in the tropic. The scene you observed here is really pretty and serene. The red and blue colours from the boats and roof of the house in the BG provide an interesting highlights to this composition. Thanks for the wonderful notes

Hello Harriet, Apart from the cloudy sky and that well placed orange roof it could be mistaken for somewhere in the Mediterranean. I like the composition with the boat in FG in full view & the line of poles forming a strong diagonal, colours are lovely and natural looking, a beautiful clear view with excellent lighting. Thanks again for your very interesting & informative note.

ein Bild, das sowohl vom Motiv und auch von der Bildgestaltung her ganz klar deine Handschrift trägt. Die diagonal verlaufenden Pfosten im Wasser gefallen mir ausgesprochen gut und auch der bewölkte Himmel im Hintergrund ist gelungen. Die Belichtung ist ebenfalls gut gewählt, so dass selbst auf dem glänzend weissen Boot im Vordergrund keine Überbelichtung zu erkennen ist. Gratulation.

Good composition in a diagonal with the repeating pattern of the boats. My eyes drift to the red coloured boat & also the biege & red poles & then onto the tiled roof of the house in the BG. Very nice scene & accompanied by your very interesting note as always!

Hello Harriet,

Happy to be able to again see your photograph after these appreciable holidays in Brittany… I like this sight on this pretty small harbour which seems quiet like the commune which surrounds it. The estival light is pleasant and this cloudy sky filled well space. I appreciate the atmosphere which emerges from this landscape. Thank you Harriet.
