Photographer’s Note

Here are some of the bathing cottages on Ærø. These lie just Northwest of the city of Ærøskøbing (Aeroeskoebing, in standard script). This is where back in the early part of the 20th century, people would come and change their clothing before heading to the beach. They also functioned a bit like summer cottages that people could escape to for a day off.

They were all built many decades ago before it was made illegal to build private cottages on public land. Now it is quite illegal to build such cottages. Due to their cultural value, they are all officially preserved and only can be acquired through inheritance.
