Sundial, old Prague
A sundial is a device that measures time by the position of the Sun. In designs such as the common horizontal or garden sundial, the sun casts a shadow from a thin rod or sharp edge onto a flat plate marked with the hours of the day.
As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow progressively points at different hours on the plate.
By design, the rod or edge is usually aligned with the North Pole of the celestial sphere. Hence, its angle with horizontal (normally)equals the geographical latitude. |
