[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Everyone has his or her own special places and special dates. In our family, such a special place is undoubtedly Prague, and a special date, connected with this place, is July 19, the date of today. So no wonder that today I post a picture from Prague.

Here we see the details of the Church of the Assumption of our Lady (Nanebevzeti Panny Marie) of the Strahov Monastery (Strahovsky Klaster) in the Hradcany region of Prague. The monastery was founded in 1142, when the first Premonstratensian monks arrived from the Rhineland. The name of the monastery derives from the Czech "straz" meaning "guard"; it was so named in recognition of its strategic location at the western approach to the city. Because of this strategic location, the monastery was regularly sacked and burned, but always rebuilt. In the middle of the Thirty years war the remains of St.Norbert, the founder of the order and one of the patron saints of Bohemia, were rescued from Protestant Magdeburg and brought here with much ceremony. In 1950 the Communist regime expelled the monks and converted the monastery into the Museum of Czechoslovak Literature; after the Velvet Revolution, it was restituted to the Premonstratensian order.

The church was rebuilt several times; the present state dates from the middle of the 18C, when the reconstruction was carried out in the then reigning Baroque style under the supervision of Anselmo Lurago, but the basic plan remains Romanesque. Here we see details of the upper left part of the Western facade with the statue of blessing St.Norbert and a vase by Quittainer. The church tower is caught by the long zoom between these two objects, and in reality it's situated at some distance; see the WS for a general view of the church.

The photo was taken exactly three years ago, on July 19, 2003. That's why I've put it also into the "decisive moment" category:)

Bonjour Alexander,

Hi Alexander,

It's not a very easy picture, but I find very well done, and certainly a scanning picture, the tower gives a excellent contrast on the white cloud! Excellent pattern!

Have a nice hot day,
John.

De hele opezet ziet er schitterend uit, hoog detail, dat is uitstekend gelukt.

Alexander I love composing photos with a zoom lens. This one of yours really is done nicely. A very balanced framework with the tree branch filling the frame and the backgound clouds. Good work!
