Olomouc is a city with a bit more than 100.000 inhabitants situated in Moravia region. City looks like a little forgotten by tourists but is really interesting. It has some specific atmosphere and a lot of interesting sights. Its old city is the second largest historical monuments cluster in the Czech Republic, after of course Prague.
The Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc is a magnificent Baroque monument, built in 1716–1754 in honour of God. The main purpose was a spectacular celebration of Catholic Church and faith, partly caused by feeling of gratitude for ending a plague, that struck Moravia between 1714 and 1716. It is the most outstanding example of this type of monument, specific for central Europe. Rising to a height of 35 m, it is decorated in the characteristic regional style known as Olomouc Baroque with many fine religious sculptures created by the distinguished Moravian artist Ondrej Zahner.
In 2000 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as “a unique material demonstration of religious faith in central Europe during the Baroque period, and the Olomouc example represents its most outstanding expression.”
On my photo you may also see Olomouc Town Hall completed in 1444. It was built originally as two gothic buildings. The further construction in the 15th century was done in late gothic style, when the third floor was added. A later reconstruction in Renaissance style was in the 17th century when a renaissance portal and stairways was add. At the town hall is located one of the most famous Olomouc attraction – an astronomical clock. |
