Photographer’s Note

As we got to know the surroundings, it is time to visit the town.

Mikulov is the heart of, so called, "The Garden of Europe". This Urban Heritage Reserve neighbour with the Palava UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Lednice-Valtice UNESCO Cultural Landscape.

Dominating the skyline (on the right) Mikulov castle was founded by Premysl Otakar I., just before 1218, so that he could help to control the border between Moravia and Austria. Jindrich of Liechtenstein received this royal castle in 1249, in exchange for his faithful allegience to the king. The town gradually gained important economic rights and became an important economic centre in Moravia.

Liechtenstein sold his Mikulov dominion to the family of Dietrichstein in 1575 who owned it till 1945.
Under the reign of Franz von Dietrichstein, cardinal, bishop of Olomouc and governor of Moravia,
gothic castle and its surroundings were turned into a comfortable and luxurious seat.

In the centre You can see a four-sided Gothic tower(later rebuilt in Renaissance) of St. Wenceslas' church, which hovers over Mikulov's historic main square.

I took this photo from under, so called, "Goat Hill" (unfortunately closed at that time) - two-storey artillery fortress, one of the most strategic fortification in XVth century.
