INTRODUCTION TO ROZMBERK NAD VLTAVOU

More photo in WS

Rožmberk nad Vltavou is a town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech republic. It has around 330 inhabitants. The village is most known for the nearby Rožmberk Castle. Rožmberk, one of the oldest castles in South Bohemia was built by the Family of Vítek around the mid 13th century, lies on the banks of the Vltava river. It developed on a trade route from Česky Krumlov to Linz in Austria.
The medieval disposition of the castle consisted of the Lower and Upper Castle. In 1522 the Upper Castle burnt down completely with the exception of the freely standing defence tower, Jakobínka. An extensive reconstruction rebuilt in 1556 had decorated the facades of the Lower Castle in the Renaissance style. While owned by the Bohemian aristocratic House of Rožmberk, it obtained township rights and grew in wealth.
The last Rožmberk owner had the interiors festively decorated. In 1620 the town became property of Karel Bonaventura Buquoy. As late as the years 1840-1857 a reconstruction in spirit of the romantic Gothic style was carried out. The castle was to become a worthy monument of the Buquoy family’s glory. The present-day sightseeing route acquaints visitors with the oldest members of the Buquoy family. The last Rožmberks and the White Lady, who appeares in this castle, are mentioned too.
Apart from the famous castle visitors can see church of St. Nikolaus (first mentioned in 1271, rebuilt in the Gothic style in the second half of the 15th century), in the central square the townhouses from the 17th-18th centuries with interesting, the new castle, which is used nowadays as accommodation unit, old and new Jewish cemetery and Chapel of Saint Ann.
