This is Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral in Brno, Czech Republic.
Its located on top of Petrov Hill, and can be seen from almost any point in Brno - its absolutely beautiful.
I have a funny story to tell about our first moments in this fine city.
We arrived by train, and thought we could simply navigate the city and find our Hotel without any problems. Well, you know that didn't happen now don't you!
Our Hotel is the white/cream colored building sitting directly below the Cathedral in this photo. We decided to "go all out" and treat ourselves to a upscale hotel for a change - trust me, we never do such things. It's not as expensive as you may think because its in the city of Brno, not Prague. It was easily the most luxurious hotel we ever stayed at, it was beautiful!!
We totally got lost walking the city with our heavy heavy backpacks, plus it was super hot and humid. We walked for what seemed like an eternity, and we basically circled the entire city like rats in a maze!
Of course we found the Hotel eventually, and when we walked in we realized everyone was wearing suits and ties, dress shoes, full of business-man-type clients.
The man working the Check-In counter took a long look at us, from head to toe, looked me directly in the eye and said...."Hi, you look terrible!"
I guess all that walking around the city trying to find the hotel really made us tired :) I'm sure he thought we walked into the wrong hotel!
I'll add a couple of photo's of Brno in the WS too.
this photo is HDR
thanks for looking

Funny story! And superb idea for a title of this shot! With the buildings captured in the foreground the monumental Gothic cathedral looks very beautiful and elegant. Very well executed shot with an excellent level of details achieved. Superb one!

that´s what I call a warm welcome:)really great and funny story:)
Of course I like also the picture!Especially the POV,which provide us with magnificent view of the Cathedral and its surroundings. Also your subtle HDR treatment let the picture appears to us more "animate" and pleasant.
Have a nice day

Glad to see your photos from Brno. Attractive postcard style, very elegance Chekh architecture. Well done.
I don't know when I will reach this country next time, 'cause now I've connected with the US by visa.
Best wishes from Russia!

Would you ever consider using a taxi to get easily to the hotel in an unknown city? :-)
This is a nice view. Looking at it for a while I reach the conclusion that it's actually the clouds that give it such a good balance. You captured them in exactly the right place. Regarding the ws photos it seems that some parts of the city are in a state or orderly collaps ;-).
snunney (78751) 2013-10-30 3:52
Not the sort of welcome you want really:-) Never mind, I expect it all turned out OK in the end. Plus, you have this fine shot to show for your troubles. I like the composition and point of view. The clouds coming in from the right seem to be like a pair of fingers pointing toward the cathedral. Pleasant light and colours and very good sharpness.

I can illicit that response, without walking for miles around a city ;-). Have to admit this is a gloriously beautiful cathedral. It dominates the skyline which is becoming rare in most cities nowadays with ever increasing tall buildings. Immaculate execution and presented marvellously.
Regards - Brian.

ooh lala, that does look like a swanky hotel to say the least. Sitting in the shadow of that fine cathedral, and standing out like a Faberge egg on a shelf of rubber ducks. It is nice to treat yourself now and then, and I know that feeling, but how forthright of the clerk to just come out and say that! Normally, I'd just be privy to a few dirty looks or harrumphs, but never outright like that. I hope it made you laugh, it would me.
Fine shot of this place too, it looks like a beautiful place by both your main post and the workshops. The elegant design of the hotel looks great against the intricate cathedral, and even the colors contrast so nicely. beautiful scene.
I only hope you stole all the small soaps and shampoos from the hotel as a type of revenge :)
All the best

I enjoyed reading your story - it is funny, but we Slavians can be to frank sometimes. Apart from the story - very nice photo with all the saturated colors and contrasting elements. The dark meets the light and the old meets the new. Very interesting composition.
Thanks for sharing

Ciao e buona serata

Very funny and entertaining story, would just loved to have been there to see the look on the check in clerks face. Nice shot here of the old church with years of grime on it making big contrast to the creamy walls of the buildings in the foreground with their wonderful red roofs.
Very nice presentation Craig.
worldcitizen (6409) 2013-10-30 15:20
Well, at least you have to admire the check-in guy's honesty! ;-) This hotel does look lovely from the outside. The lighting in this photo is great, and I like the red roofs beneath the beautiful church. You have so many fun travel stories. :-)
jcpix (11038) 2013-10-30 19:25
Geez Craig...clean yourself up would ya', you slob! lol
One laugh for another today, funny story! Great memory though, right? :)
I went through a similar situation in Santa Margherita, walking from the train station to the hotel during an epic heat wave with high humidity, yuk! I must have looked like I had just emerged from the sea as I stood at the front desk covered in perspiration. So gross! Even worse, the "air conditioning" that was listed as one of the amenities was nothing more than a desk fan mounted in the upper corner of the room!? WTF?
Anyway, enough about me and onto this shot. I like how you've put this together, it brings out the strong shapes and contrasting colors/tones. The best thing though is something we never have control over...but it can often times make or break a shot, those clouds, yeah? :) Heaven was smiling upon you here to fill that negative space!
O.K., I'm in a goofy, low brow humor kind of mood today...and I'll probably regret asking this, but what is the purpose of that object/structure in the bottom right corner, it looks like a big stubby......?? D'oh!
Enjoy the rest of your evening. Take it easy.

SnapRJW (28828) 2013-10-30 23:50
A super story Craig and a fine photograph to accompany it! Your hotel does look rather swish... and why not, a treat is good for you once in a while ;) I like the contrast of architecture here, the cathedral looks very ornate next to the simpler lines of the hotel. Nice too that we can see a sliver of countryside in the distance beneath that superb sky. Warm regards Rosemary
PS Next time arrive in a limo !

Know the feeling. I have sometimes gotten lost when asking directions and found it is often more reliable to look at a guidebook map because locals don't like to admit that they don't know or cannot understand what you want. Good sharpness and nice warm cold color contrasts between the red roofs and blue sky. Did you tip the bellboy? Tfs!
jemaflor (79958) 2013-10-31 12:45
Excellent pov, the composition is well balanced, light is perfect, interesting architecture, tfs.

A carefully constructed composition and a delight to view.A really wonderful and original view of this church.Truly attractive and lively picture! You have framed it very well - great work.Well composed photo. TFS.
rigoletto (34109) 2013-10-31 13:22
hmmm, if your hotel was that "little palace" over there, clearly the reception guy misinterpreted you as people looking for some sort of backpackers hostel. i don't think you put a tie on your neck the other day... well, i would write to another photo of yours but, you see, how the photographer's note works well :)
a wonderful clear sky with a soft light and fairy tale architecture come together.
ps: meeting malgo was a great experience. such a smart, funny and energizing lady! i should have known to what extent those "itchy feet" could go, though. lol
mkamionka (29153) 2013-10-31 13:45
very funny story! I guess this may be due to the language or cultural barrier, I guess we just say things like this or are to honest...
Beautiful picture. The cathedral is so attractive -I like the towers, they seem really unique. I would love to visit this town someday.
This is exactly the type of HDR which I like. Very subtle and if someone wouldn't know -wouldn't guess it. On the other hand some people seem to convince us that their photos are not HDR or at least not consciously done as HDRs but they are. Either camera itself is able to do it or a processing is just called differently but does in fact same thing...
Here it has well emphasized the charming clouds.

nice view of Gothic cathedral in Brno. Fine warm light and colours. Interesting complementary WS also. Amazing result of wide angle lens.
Interesting hotel adventures you had in this city. You look ok., do not worry.
Have a nice day.

Great view on the cathedral with a very good lights ambiance
No distortions of the architecture

Belle soirée et bon WE

I am so ashamed for what the man told you... I hope the rest of your experience in my country was better than this.
How did you happen to come to CR, just on holiday? I am glad you went to more places than only Prague, not many people do, but there is so much more than Prague here...
Beautiful sunny day shot, with very wise usage of HDR cause the shades still look natural.
Best regards from CR
PS. Thanks for lovely words and encouragement in your critique of the Exeter cathedral shot, I wish I had more time for pictures and for TE...

One of the best part of the trips are the funny stories:)! Seems a nice and calm city and the photo is very natural, doesn't even seem HDR! Light, colours and pov are very good!
No,the kids didn't ask for money. If it happens, it's in the most touristic places but we haven't been there. We found no tourists in Lompoul because the sea is too dangerous to swim.
fotka (3181) 2013-11-15 6:04
Well, funny story and I feel sorry that you got unpleasant welcome.
But on the other hand it is beautiful shot from your visit in Brno.
Wonderful gothic cathedral raised above the roofs of the houses.
Great quality photo and interesting note.
Have a nice weekend,
