THE DALMATIAN COAST

“You must try Dubrovnik before you go home…” So sang Liza Minelli in the Broadway classic, “Ring Them Bells” about a globetrotting young woman who leaves in search of love.

In the past I’ve posted photographs of Crotia — shots from Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir. But Dubronik is the ultimate jewel in the crown of the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. In this view of the rugged coast that I thought was unusually compelling the vantage point for the shot was a small outdoor restaurant perched on the side of a cliff outside the virtually impenetrable city wall. (A small doorway on the interior side of the thick wall allowed passage onto the terrace supporting the restaurant.) In the distance one can see the cruise ship Crystal Serenity at anchor. I had been giving lectures on board for the last ten days, as I would continue for the next fourteen. One can also see a pair of boats tendering passengers between boat and shore.

Historically, it is known that as far back as the Stone Age, this region was inhabited. During the early Christian era a village flourished on top of a nearby mountain. The term “old town” refers to a settlement that was established at Dubrovnik in the 7th century, and which since the medieval times has been a walled city. It is possible to climb to the top of the massive walls and see the city from the level of the roofs. It costs 20 Croatian Kuna (HRK), or between three and four dollars for the opportunity do the perimeter of the city. The views are spectacular, but the 90-minute walk can be an exhausting venture — especially in the hottest days of the summer. Among other views are countless medieval buildings, including the oldest functioning apothecary shop (drug store).

The composition of this image is reminiscent of a two-year old post, Vertical Climb to Eze.
