Photographer’s Note
THE DALMATIAN COAST
“You must try Dubrovnik before you go home…” So sang Liza Minelli in the Broadway classic, “Ring Them Bells” about a globetrotting young woman who leaves in search of love.
In the past I’ve posted photographs of Crotia — shots from Dubrovnik, Split and Trogir. But Dubronik is the ultimate jewel in the crown of the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. In this view of the rugged coast that I thought was unusually compelling the vantage point for the shot was a small outdoor restaurant perched on the side of a cliff outside the virtually impenetrable city wall. (A small doorway on the interior side of the thick wall allowed passage onto the terrace supporting the restaurant.) In the distance one can see the cruise ship Crystal Serenity at anchor. I had been giving lectures on board for the last ten days, as I would continue for the next fourteen. One can also see a pair of boats tendering passengers between boat and shore.
Historically, it is known that as far back as the Stone Age, this region was inhabited. During the early Christian era a village flourished on top of a nearby mountain. The term “old town” refers to a settlement that was established at Dubrovnik in the 7th century, and which since the medieval times has been a walled city. It is possible to climb to the top of the massive walls and see the city from the level of the roofs. It costs 20 Croatian Kuna (HRK), or between three and four dollars for the opportunity do the perimeter of the city. The views are spectacular, but the 90-minute walk can be an exhausting venture — especially in the hottest days of the summer. Among other views are countless medieval buildings, including the oldest functioning apothecary shop (drug store).
The composition of this image is reminiscent of a two-year old post, Vertical Climb to Eze.

Hello Bulent,
The first feature that strikes me is the excellent, diagonal composition. The rocky f/g has wonderful textural details, and then in the b/g there is the delight of that ship sailing on the azure, blue sea. Superb!
Kind regards,

Merhaba Bulent Bey. Thanks for showing me my beloved Adriatic, the sea that was never far from me in my childhood, whether at school (we could see it from the classroom windows), whether at home (we could see it and smell it from our balcony)or when asleep during the summer siesta (for it was then in my dreams together with my friends as we played in the clear water during our waking hours.)You have captured its colour and the summery light. Great composition that shows how difficult it would be to breach those walls. Selamlar. Klaudio.

Hello Bulent,
Always interesting to see your fine image and this one is no exception. A well chosen point of view with the fortifications, which seem like an extension of the craggy rocks below, framing the cruise ship at anchor in the bay. An image of two definite halves, both of which are interesting in their own right, but which together have a pleasing synergy.

Merhaba, Bulent -
It looks like you took this picture from midair! Happens a lot in that part of the world. An interesting juxtaposition of scenes, and a good choice to go vertical - it emphasizes the steepness of the walls and the cliff. Not the usual Dubrovnik shot.
How old is the apothecary? I visited one in Tallinn that has been open since the 1300s, run by the same family, too, until recently.
Best,

Hello dear Bulent,
the foreground texture in rocks is amazing, it looks like watching a movie with a different interlacing, interesting geological matter. The view of the Serenity far away adds freshness and dynamism. Indeed it's an admirable picture, very well composed with lovely real colors which beautufully contrasted.
All the best.

Good morning, Bulent.
Until I read your note I visualised you clinging to the hillside, camera in one hand, and marvelled at your skill in finding a rock edge parallel to the right-hand edge of the Crystal Serenity. Now that I've looked longer, I marvel even more at your skills. Although the composition is so asymmetrical it does not seem unbalanced. I wonder how much this is due to the framing? I delight in the flowers, and I'm sure the rocks would feel rough if I put my finger on the screen!
