Photographer’s Note

We were en route into the Velebit Mountains to walk in the Paklenica National Park and into the Paklenica Gorge. We stopped at some mirila (singular mirilo). These are the flat rocks on the ground you can see here, with smaller upright rocks standing at each end. Mirila mark the final resting places of the souls of the deceased. When a person died they were wrapped in a shroud and taken there and laid on the flat rocks facing East. The upright rocks mark the head and feet. At this point it was thought the soul left the body, facing east to greet the sunrise. The body was then taken to be buried at a churchyard near the coast, leaving the soul on its mirilo. This practice continued until the 1950s.

As before the water is the Velebit Channel in the Adriatic Sea. It was about 7:30am and very hazy so I struggled a bit with the background to bring out the detail.

It rained later that day so I didn’t get many photos.
