Volga Kometa "Zverinac"
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Airfoils are a clever way of moving on the water. Basically, the boat, at a certain speed, starts to fly on the water, with its "wings". In this way, the "wetted surface" is greatly reduced, so the drag, and the vessel can reach higher speeds.
This particular airfoil is a russian make Volga model Kometa, named "Zverinac". It has 1700 HP and can cruise at more than 30 kts. Take a look to the people leaning out of the hatch to see the size of this boat.
PS for the most curious of you: the fact that the fins are protruding out of the water shows that this airfoil has a passive stabilization system: if the prow gets lower, for a wave or so, a bigger part of the wing will stay under the water, making more lift and pushing the prow back up. More modern airfoils have fully submersed wings, which have better efficiency, but need to be actively (electronically) controlled. |

Interesting uncommon way of marine transport, I wonder why it's not popular?!!

Dear Marko,
thanks for looking into my pics--and giving the commentary in german!
I like your "Kometa" pic. The background fits nicely. It's difficult to catch them as you did because they are either moored or too fast. Good and interesting note!
My best regards,
Dietrich

Hi Marko. A good clear close up zoom of this powerful-looking craft/hydrofoil. Good colours and a dynamic action photo. TFS. Murray.
