Photographer’s Note

This image is taken outside the amphitheatre in Pula - one of the largest in the Roman world - the shadows are cast from a vast array of lights assembled for a concert the following evening when the whole place buzzed with a massive crowd....but here in this quiet moment the building created it's own extension of beautiful shadows on the surrounding buildings - this is taken with my OM2N using my knees as a tripod.

The amphitheatre is the 6th largest in the world and can hold around 22,000 people. The amphitheatre was built in the 1BC, but the population of Pula at the time was only around 5,000. One can only imagine that it pulled people from far and wide across the hinterland to watch the spectacle of the games. Perhaps the Romans planned a major expansion of the town that never came - I once lived in a village of 6,000 people and I couldn't imagine a large structure being built there but in the past it had a large castle.

It certainly is a beautiful yet still well used ruin.

The colour cast in the shadows is from the strength of the multi-coloured light arrays and not a film effect.
