Labyrinthine Streets of Trogir Photo

Photographer’s Note

On the coast of Dalmatia, Trogir is a small walled medieval town on an island connected to the mainland by a small bridge. On the other side of the island another bridge connects the town to the bigger island of Ciovo.

Trogir actually dates back to the 3rd century BC, a Greek settlement called Tragyrion. When the Romans took over, it became Tragurium until destruction by the Saracens in 1123. Its continuous history dates back to Hungarian and then Venetian rule in the 14th and 15th centuries. Since 1997 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Inside the city walls there is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets. This shot is just one example. There is another in the WS

Nice idea to show us this romantic street showing the influence of the Mediterranean architectural style.
A cosy street where the extended wire shows the link with modernity.

Hello Kath,
A good capture of this little street with its fine doorway at the end. The tree and plant make an excellent foil for the old stones, whilst the cobbles lead the eye to the star of the show. Good natural colours and excellent clarity.

A lovely impression of this narrow street in this town, presented in an excellent vertical composition. The light is pleasant and gives the colours a nice, soft touch and adds a peaceful atmosphere to the photo. Sharpness is superb, excellent work!

Hi Kath, Excellent quality, These little medieval towns with their narrow paved streets are very beautiful & interesting. The greenery adds contrast, colour & interest. The detail, light & depth are good. Love those window shutters.

Bright image with lot's of detail on the brick wall. the perspective depth is very nice composed, brings depth a a very good focalpoint in the back. These streets are indeed very narrow...were do these people park their car? ;-)

Hi, Kath -

Both this picture and the WS one are fascinating shots, but I think this one lacks something; it looks a little bit washed out. I think lowering Brightness about 2% would give it a bit more snap. It does give a nice sense of the narrow, old feel of the town.

This is a pleasant scene; the moment of capture was good because of the reasonably soft light , i am just a bit disturbed by the wire on the top of the photo.

Gerald PS, on your D300, are you using the Active D Lighting feature and if so, is it truly effective in addressing problems of wide dynamic range - dealing with over bright and dark areas in an image as part of capturing the shot? Hi Kath,
It's a lovely little alley. They may have little space, but they don't give up having a fig tree and a small palm tree. The compo is wonderful and the light management and sharpness are truly amazing. One would expect that the alley would be quite dark and I almost fear to touch the screen on top of the walls fearing that I'll get hurt by the roughness of the stones. :-)

Hello Kath,

This compact, vertical format gives a good impression of the tall, narrow alleyway.
Excellent details of the walls, the cobbles and the focal point, the door.
The vegetation is useful in softening and lightening the very angular setting.

hmm this one tricked me a bit, I like the POV yeah, however some small and annoying details could be left out with clone stamp. I'm talking about the cables on top and some lines not need to be shown. I've run out of workshops to create you a quick one here, but I think you got the idea.

Another thing you might consider is the perspective of the wide angle view.
Try Filter -> Distort -> Lens correction, and put a negative value I'd say around -10 to the vertical perspective setting. That will straighten your image a bit, don't forget to apply sharpness afterwards if needed.

Did you clarified this one? or is it the stones that vivid?

Nice shot, like I said before, I like the POV much here, the 2 open windows are the strongest part in my opinion.

Looking at this image and thinking of why you've chosen
this particular street (this type of narrow streets have
their unique name, did you know?), I can see how much
you liked your visit to Trogir! (btw, seems strange that
you used name Trogia when placing the town in the right
region, when the place is called Trogir like you say in the title - typo?).
I like your POV and have no complaint about technical
side of the photo. Cables are so common to the whole Croatian
coast that cloning them out would be a sin.
Love to see a familiar scene of what it seems to be a
fig tree growing out on the street from someone's
front yard?
Good one in the WS as well!

nicely seen shot down this narrow alley, must have been quite dark considering you exposure values, and that you wwere also on ISO500. Nice details on the walls, and the plants add that litte bit of colour. TFS

Interesting framing option with the stone walls, framing the building in the BG with the arched wooden door. The feeling of 3 D is very clear here with the really narrow street..the details of the open windows is also something I like a lot. Well done!

Hi Kath,
Your very well-framed composition also benefits from your outstanding light management to capture a scene that any visitor to Europe sees and tries to capture...usually unsuccessfully.

The framing with the doorway completely filling the passage conveys the narrowness of the passage while the two plant bring life to the scene. Your light management gives us both the warm tones of the red stone and the contrasting greens of the plants. Well done!

Kath, working my way through your gallery I found this gem. I love how you handle shadows, dark to be what they are but not so dark as to bury the detail within. Best of all the light sky is properly exposed (they are so often overexposed) and the framing didn't shy away from it. Great shot.
