Photographer’s Note

This is the Cathedral of St Domnius, built in Diocletian’s Palace, which forms the basis for the old town in Split. Roman Emperor Diocletian retired here in AD305 and had an octagonal mausoleum built for his body. During his time as emperor, Diocletian was responsible for the killing of more Christians than any other emperor and in an ironic twist, the mausoleum was consecrated as the (Christian) Cathedral of St Domnius in the 7th century. Diocletian’s sarcophagus was removed and replaced by the remains of St Domnius. Between the 12th and 16th centuries the Romanesque bell tower was added, standing proud and visible from all around.

I found it very difficult to get an uncluttered photo of what was the mausoleum and the bell tower together. This is one of my seconds attempts on the second day there. It was taken from the side behind the main thoroughfare and you can just make out part of the octagonal shape of the mausoleum. One of my first attempts the day before was taken from the other side and is in the WS. There is also a perspective view of the bell tower taken from a limited POV
