Sibenik history begins in 1066, with the act of donation of King Petar Kresimir IV. After the reign of Croatian kings, to some extent, Croatian-Hungarian, Sibenik in the fifteenth century enters into nearly 400-year reign of Venice. Precisely because of this period, and this became the most important rulers of Sibenik cultural and historical monument - the famous Cathedral of St. James, which was built in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In 1797 Sibenik becomes a part of the Habsburg Monarchy, which lasts until 1918.

Later, during the Second World War until 1944, Sibenik was under occupation. At the beginning of the Civil War, in 1991, the inhabitants of ©ibenik defended their city.
