Risnjak National Park is located in Gorski Kotar, near the Gulf of Kvarner, 18 km north of Rijeka. It was founded in 1953 and covers an area of about 32 km2, is distinguished by a different kind of wildlife, than flora and fauna typical, few kilometers away, the coast. The park includes the most interesting and highest massive mountains lying in areas Snježnik and Veliki Risnjak massif from the highest point of 1,528 meters and the source area of the river Kupa. The park belongs to the band of the Dinaric Alps.
Among the many species that occur here, certainly the most well-known is the lynx - a species of wild cat, from which the park got the name, and which in other countries is in danger of extinction - the green area declared a national park, and given special protection.
The two highest peaks in the park is Veliki Risnjak height 1528 m and a height of 1506 Snjeznik Dominant among the park rocks are limestone and dolomite, which affects the shape of the presence of surface and water resources. The terrain park is characteristic of water shortage that causes frequent despite the rain and snow in the mountains of Snježnik and Risnjak only a few small sources. There are numerous karst formations, and terrain park like its shaping of Swiss cheese - where the eye can see, there are less or more depressions in the ground and pouring karst. Climate, formed at the interface between the Adriatic Sea and the continental influence, and warm summers with average temperatures of 20 ° C, rainy springs and autumns, and cold, long and snowy winter. Because of the large amount (over 1400 m) snow remains here for more than 115 days a year, and its cover can reach up to 4 m thick
The park, as indeed the entire region of Gorski Kotar, covering old and tall forests (they grow not only in the highest parts of the massif). It is these forests are the most characteristic feature of the landscape, while the main reason for which it was created in the area a national park. In many places the great old trees are preserved, such as one can find a huge fir tree has a height of 45 m and a diameter of over one meter .. The most common tree species are beech and fir, of course, but one can also find spruces, maples and elms mountain.
