Photographer’s Note
As far as the technical part is concerned, this is one terrible shot. Or rather, it shows the possibilities of digital cameras some six years ago (1.3 MP Olympus in this case). The unsharp pixels fighting each other, lack of details and overall unreal look add to the general confusion, I guess...
This being said, now something about the scene: this is a view from Sveta Katarina hill, some 299 meters above the sea level and above the town of Rijeka, towards east, Trsat hill and the island of Krk in the distance (not that it's easy to tell what it is...).
The karst stone&steel structure in the foreground is (obviously) man made, and represents the observatory of the Italian fortress from the nineteen thirties.
Speaking of fortresses, we usually think of white stone walls, towers and castles...Obviously nothing like it in this case, but gives you an idea of the evolution of the art of fortification of the twentieth century before the WW2, "fortress" being deep underground, with only well camouflaged artillery pieces and machine guns embrasures lurking from below...
BTW, this place (hundreds of meters of underground galleries and shelters, a dozen or so steel casemates and cupolas) officially doesn't exist.
It's not in any of the cadastre records.
So, the idea is to preserve it, or rather stop some a**hole from finding "good scrap steel"...
Filtered with NeatImage, adding to the unreal look.
