Fiume (in croato Rijeka, in ungherese Fiume, in sloveno Reka; in tedesco Sankt Veit am Flaum, 128.735 ab. nel 2011), situata sull'Adriatico (Golfo del Quarnero) è la terza città della Croazia per popolazione dopo Zagabria e Spalato. Sede universitaria ed arcivescovile.

Già appartenente all'Impero austro-ungarico (dal 1779 al 1919), Stato libero di Fiume dal 1920 al 1924 e italiana dal 1924 al 1947 (capoluogo dell'omonima provincia), dal 1947 al 1992 fece parte della Jugoslavia; è croata dal 1991.
Il posto dell'odierna città era anticamente abitato dalla tribù illirica dei Liburni: conquistato dalle legioni della Repubblica Romana nel 60 a.C. fu fondato il municipio con il nome di Tarsatica.

Nel medioevo la città passò sotto il successivo controllo franco, croato e del vescovo di Pola dal 1000: in questo periodo la città si governò da comune autonomo raggiungendo una notevole prosperità commerciale favorendo anche l'immigrazione di mercanti italiani. Fiume poi diventò ungherese prima di finire all'Austria degli Asburgo nel 1471. Nel XVII secolo il commercio fiumano si estese sino in Puglia quindi aumentò l'immigrazione marchigiana e veneta. La Repubblica di Venezia non ne ebbe mai il controllo se non per una brevissima parentesi nel 1508 ma la distrusse due volte. Tra le tante lingue parlate in città si usò, sino alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, il fiumano, ossia il veneziano "de mar", del quale esiste anche un dizionario fiumano/italiano ed è una parlata tuttora usata dai membri della minoranza italiana. Ma la lingua originale di Fiume, che ne implica la sua latinità originaria, sembra fosse il quarnerino, dialetto della famiglia ladina, parlato, sembra, fino al XIX secolo anche se non ha lasciato tracce scritte.
L'invenzione del siluro [modifica]

Il primo primitivo siluro fu inventato dal fiumano Giovanni Luppis attorno al 1860 e fu quindi perfezionato, sempre a Fiume, dal britannico Robert Whitehead, che subentro a Luppis nello sviluppo dell'arma. Fu sempre a Fiume che Whitehead aprì la “Whitehead & Co.”, che produsse ed esportò la nuova, rivoluzionaria arma, presso le marine militari di tutto il mondo.
