Photographer's Note

Krajina - the region of the Balkan Peninsula, mainly on the territory of Croatia, on the border of Bosnia. It provides a bridge between the agricultural north, and the coast of Croatia - is a major part of the so-called. Central Croatia.

A few dozen kilometers south of Zagreb terrain varies significantly - starting in the mountains, stretching from here to the Adriatic Sea. South of Karlovac is sparsely populated. This is not a typical area of agricultural or industrial. There is no major urban centers.

Inhabited mostly by Serbs, was one of the areas of inflammation of the modern conflict in the Balkans. Many of the village is still damaged after the military operations on its territory in the years 1991 to 1995.

Following the declaration of independence by Croatia June 25, 1991, the Serbs announced the establishment of their own state - the Republic of Serbian Krajina, but the result of the 1995 campaign "Oluja" was expelled 200,000 Serbs, the responsibility of the Croatian General Ante Gotovina. In 1995, Krajina was seized by Croatian forces. Republic came under UN administration. February 7, 1997 Krajina was officially re-integrated into Croatia. UN troops have completed their mission on Jan. 18, 1998.

Croats are reluctant to return to the land. The Serbs will not allow it. Although these are interesting areas for tourists, however, remain in the shadow of the coast.
